Former world record holder Eliud Kipchoge has picked the successful INEOS 1:59 Challenge as the most memorable performance in his trophy laden career.
Kipchoge made history in October, 2019 when he clocked 1:59:40 in Vienna, Austria and in the process became the only human being to have ever ran a sub-two hour marathon.
Although the use of technology made Kipchoge’s time not to be officially recognized by the World Athletics, his performance will forever be remembered.
More than five years after the event, Kipchoge has disclosed that the incredible achievement he attained in Vienna is the one thing that stands out in his career.

“Breaking the two hour barrier. Still the best actually in all my career. Making history. And you know, making history is something that can stay forever,” he told an audience during a virtual meet and greet session.
During that four lap event, Kipchoge ran a consistent race of 2:50 min/km throughout the entire event with a split of approximately 2:48min/km to 2.52min/km.
Many spectators including the current Kenyan President William Ruto and Kipchoge’s family were in attendance to witness him break the barrier that most people used to believe was impossible.
The Kaptagat based athlete proved his popular mantra “No Human is Limited” after crossing the finishing line that memorable day.
“It is a great feeling to make history in sport after Sir Roger Bannister in 1954. I am the happiest man in the world to be the first human to run under two hours and I can tell people that no human is limited.

I expect more people all over the world to run under two hours after today,” he was quoted by the organizers then.
Besides the Ineos 1:59 Challenge, Kipchoge has managed to reach other instrumental milestones in his career.
For instance, he became the first man to run a sub 2:02:00 marathon before setting the previous world record of 2:01:09 in the 2023 Berlin Marathon edition.

The world record was lowered later that year by his compatriot the late Kelvin Kiptum, who produced a monstrous performance to clock 2:00:35.
Furthermore, Kipchoge has won more than 10 Abbott World Marathon Majors titles in his career plus two Olympic Games gold medals, a statistic that makes him one of the best marathoners in history.
