Mathare United midfielder Kevin Kimani has announced that her sister Janet Wanja is undergoing treatment at the moment at a Nairobi-based medical facility.

According to Kimani, who has made several appearances for the national men’s football team Harambee Stars, the volleyball icon is battling cancer.

The experienced footballer stated that Wanja has not been feeling well for a couple of months now.

“We write to you with heavy hearts and hopeful spirits as we share the news about our beloved Janet Wanja. Many of you know Janet as a remarkable player from the Malkia Strikers and Kenya Pipeline.

Her journey has been one of strength, determination, and unwavering resilience. Janet has been bravely battling gallbladder cancer for the past four months,” read part of his statement.

Kimani further requested Kenyans to be a source of strength to Wanja and put her in their prayers during this difficult time.

“Throughout her life, she has inspired us with her courage and tenacity, and now, she needs our collective support more than ever. Janet is receiving treatment in Nairobi, and the path ahead is challenging. We kindly ask for your emotional support during this difficult time. 

Your messages of hope, words of encouragement, and expressions of love will provide Janet with the strength and positivity she needs. Let us come together to support Janet as she has supported and inspired so many of us. Your thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your unwavering support and for standing with Janet in her time of need,” he added.

Wanja is one of the most talented female volleyball players that have ever donned the Kenyan national team jersey in history.

The 40-year-old started playing the game at the tender age of 12 and went on to win multiple trophies at individual and national levels.

She was part of the Malkia Strikers team that played in the 2004 Olympic Games that was held in Athens, Greece. In addition, the Mukumu Girls High School has won several African titles with the national team.

Besides playing for Kenya Pipeline and Kenya Commercial Bank, Wanja has also had stints in Rwanda, and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
