Leading online gaming firm SportPesa has announced a restructured partnership agreement with the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) in support of the men’s national rugby 7s team, Shujaa, ahead of their highly anticipated return to the HSBC World Rugby 7s Series.
The restructured sponsorship contract will see Shujaa receive 82.5 million for the next two years from the gaming firm as they make their return to the prestigious stage after an incredible one year.
The sponsorship deal reaffirms SportPesa’s unwavering commitment to promoting Kenya’s sporting talent to the highest level and aims to provide sustainable support for Shujaa’s journey in the 24/25 campaign that kicks off on 30 November 2024 in Dubai.
Despite facing relegation in 2023, the Kenya 7s, under the guidance of Kevin Wambua, showed incredible character in lifting the 2023 Africa 7s title where they stunned heavyweights South Africa to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics for the third consecutive time.

We believe in the potential of Shujaa and are confident that with this support, they will make a remarkable impact on this season of the HSBC World Rugby Series,” he said.
KRU chairman Sasha Mutai, while expressing his gratitude to SportPesa, said Shujaa’s recent good form was due to the steadfast support of benefactors and the unwavering goodwill of players and fans that continues to be pivotal in fostering a thriving rugby culture in Kenya.
“We are thrilled to restructure our partnership with SportPesa, a steadfast supporter of Kenyan rugby. As Shujaa prepares to make a triumphant return to the HSBC World Rugby Series, this support will be instrumental in ensuring the team is well-equipped and motivated to compete.
We are proud to continue our partnership with SportPesa in promoting sports excellence in Kenya.
With this new agreement, Shujaa will receive Kes 33 million ahead of their 24/25 season with the balance of Kes 49.5 million going to support their exploits in the 2025/26 season.
Shujaa assistant coach Louis Kisia on his part lauded SportPesa’s commitment to supporting the team as they make their return to the top tier.
“On behalf of the entire Shujaa team, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks to SportPesa for their generous support. This sponsorship comes at a crucial time as we gear up for the HSBC World Rugby Series.
With this backing, we are more determined than ever to showcase our talent, resilience, and passion on the international stage. We are ready to make Kenya proud,” he said.
Shujaa have been pitted against France, Australia and South Africa in Pool A of the season-opening Dubai 7s tournament.
