Gor Mahia assistant coach Kobi Bismarck has backed captain Alpha Onyango for a return to the Harambee Stars squad following an impressive start to the 2026/27 SportPesa League season.
Onyango has been one of Gor Mahia’s standout performers in the opening matches, combining his responsibilities in midfield with a growing influence in front of goal.
The former Green Commandos midfielder has scored in each of Gor Mahia’s last three matches helping the record Kenyan champions maintain a strong start to their league campaign.
The Gor Mahia captain opened his account during the club’s entertaining 4-2 victory over Murang’a SEAL, finding the back of the net in a match where the Green Army showcased their attacking quality.
He continued his scoring run against APS Bomet, netting the decisive goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory after being set up by Ben Stanley Omondi.

Onyango then proved to be the difference once again against Bandari, scoring the winning goal in another 1-0 triumph. This time, Ebenezer Assifuah provided the assist as Gor Mahia secured all three points.
His ability to deliver in decisive moments has impressed the technical bench with Bismarck describing the midfielder as the club’s best player so far this season.
“So far, he has been the best player in the last three matches because, for a midfielder to score three out of three, it is wonderful,” Bismarck said.
The assistant coach also praised Onyango’s all-round contribution, pointing out that his performances extend beyond his goalscoring exploits.
“His general performance in terms of tackling, execution with the ball, off-the-ball movement and all that has been good. As a leader also, I think it is good for his confidence,” he added.
Onyango has stepped up his responsibilities as Gor Mahia’s stand-in captain with Captain Sylvester Owino being injured and his recent displays have underlined his importance to the team both defensively and offensively.
His ability to break up opposition attacks, dictate play in midfield and make timely runs into the final third has given Gor Mahia an additional attacking dimension.
Bismarck believes Onyango’s current form could put him back in contention for a place in the Harambee Stars squad, especially if he maintains his consistency in the coming weeks.
The midfielder has recently been absent from national team selections despite previously featuring prominently in the national setup.
He was part of Benni McCarthy’s squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) that was co-hosted by Kenya,Uganda and Tanzania where he delivered memorable performances for the hosts.

Onyango earned Man of the Match recognition during Kenya’s historic CHAN campaign including in the Harambee Stars’ tournament debut against the Democratic Republic of Congo which Kenya won 1-0 at Kasarani Stadium.
His performances during the competition demonstrated his ability to compete at the international level.
Although he has not been a regular feature in recent Harambee Stars selections, Bismarck believes his current performances could make it difficult for the national team selectors to overlook him.
“For some time, he has been dropped from the national team. I believe that the national team coaches are watching. I think that if he continues like that, he will deserve a place in the national team as well,” Bismarck told sports radar.
With the Harambee Stars continuing set to face Bafana Bafana twice in November during the AFCON 2027 Qualifiers, Onyango will be hoping to maintain his impressive club form and attract the attention of the national team head coach Benni McCarthy.
