Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia proved that the party is not over until it is over as they squeezed a late 0-1 win over APS Bomet at the Raila Odinga Stadium on Saturday to maintain their perfect start to the 26/27 SportPesa League season.
With less than five minutes to go, Gor had captain Alpha Onyango to thank as his fierce drive into the bottom corner left goalkeeper Maxwell Mulili with no chance as it stole all the three points for Gor who had appeared to being forced to a draw.
Having started the campaign with a high-scoring 4-2 win over Murang’a Seal in the season opener, Gor were hoping for a repeat of the same to maintain their perfect start.
However, a combination of astute organization and spirited defensive display from Bomet frustrated Gor Mahia for a majority of the game in the game that had no clear cut chances.

In the clash, it is APS Bomet who threatened to take the lead as early as the tenth minute but the heroics of Paul Ochuoga saved Gor Mahia’s blushes as the defender cleared the ball of the line.
It all started when Rodgers Kipkemoi’s cross into the area was met by Philip Wasai who rose the highest. His attempt looked set to break the deadlock only for Kevin Omondi to make a crucial block that Ochuoga followed through with a clearance on the line.
No team took clear control of the tie and both sides only fed on scraps.
Before the break, Ebenezer Ocran’s long-range attempt took a wicked deflection, but the attempt veered off target as the two sides went into the break with the deadlock intact.

Right at the start of the second half, Jackson Dwang’ attempted to catch the keeper off his line with an attempt similar to the one against Murang’a Seal but this time his strike just went over the bar despite Mulili racing back to his line.
The game still lacked a particular favourite and Gor head coach Charles Akonnor went for the jugular by introducing the trio of Daniel Sakari, Ben Stanley Omondi and Enock Machaka in the place of Paul Ochuoga, Patrick Essombe and Dwang’.
Those substitutes proved to be exactly what would work for the winning goal as Ben Stanley showed composure in controlling Sakari’s cross into the box before laying the ball off to Alpha who rifled into the bottom corner for the match winning goal.
The goal ensured K’Ogalo picked two wins in their opening two games as they maintained their perfect start to the season.
