AFC Leopards drop points at home as Shabana hold them to thrilling Nyayo stalemate

AFC Leopards vs Shabana FC SportPesa League

AFC Leopards were forced to settle for a goalless draw against Shabana FC at Nyayo National Stadium after a tightly contested SportPesa League encounter in which both sides created chances but failed to find the back of the net.

The result halted Ingwe’s recent dominance over the Glamour Boys, having beaten the Kisii-based side both home and away last season.

AFC Leopards started on the front foot, with Adama Kanteh coming close to breaking the deadlock in the fifth minute after being awarded a free-kick just outside the box. The Gambian forward curled his effort narrowly wide in what was an early warning to the Shabana defence.

James Kinyanjui was a constant threat down the left flank, using his pace and trickery to trouble James Mazembe before setting up Kelly Madada, whose goal-bound effort was deflected behind by Shabana captain George Onyango.

Ingwe continued to pile pressure on their opponents, with Madada firing wide from distance in the 21st minute before Kanteh failed to hit the target after being picked out by Samuel Semo.

Shabana gradually found their rhythm, with the midfield battle between Biron Otieno and Musa Oundo providing plenty of intensity.

The visitors nearly took the lead in the 36th minute when captain Orako found himself one-on-one with Tom Ikara, but the AFC Leopards goalkeeper produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.

Kinyanjui then delivered a pinpoint cross for Samuel Ssenyonjo in the 42nd minute, but the striker’s free header drifted wide as the two sides went into the break deadlocked.

The second half continued in similar fashion, with Ikara again called into action to deny Shabana, while AFC Leopards responded with attacking moves of their own. Semo came close after being set up by Kinyanjui, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

The biggest opportunity of the match arrived when AFC Leopards were awarded a penalty after Semo was brought down inside the box. Captain Kayci Odhiambo stepped up to take responsibility, but Shabana goalkeeper Pavel Ndzila guessed correctly to save the spot-kick and preserve his side’s clean sheet.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of a breakthrough, with Elias Mugane and Boniface Munyendo introduced for AFC Leopards, while Shabana brought on Afiz Alhason, Danson Kiprono and Derrick Oketch.

The Glamour Boys threatened on the counterattack, with Oketch wasting a promising opportunity after being set up by Mazembe. Derrick Otieno also tested the Ingwe backline, but Kevin Otiala and his defensive colleagues stood firm.

A late flurry of attacks from both sides failed to produce a goal, with Shabana’s defensive resilience proving crucial as the fourth official added five minutes of stoppage time.

Neither side could find the decisive finish, and the contest ended in a hard-fought stalemate that saw the teams share the spoils at Nyayo.

For AFC Leopards, the missed penalty will be a major talking point after an afternoon in which they had opportunities to claim all three points. Shabana, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their defensive discipline and Ndzila’s crucial intervention to earn a valuable point against one of their traditional rivals.
