Sharrif Musa targets better season after brace in Gor Mahia’s SportPesa League opener

Gor Mahia winger Sharrif Musa has vowed to improve on last season’s performances after opening his 2026/27 SportPesa League campaign in impressive fashion, scoring twice in the defending champions’ 4-2 victory over Murang’a SEAL under the floodlights.

The former Kariobangi Sharks attacker was among the standout performers as Gor Mahia began their title defence with three points, delivering a composed display that offered an early glimpse of what fans can expect from him this season.

Musa looked sharp and confident against Murang’a SEAL, making the most of his opportunities to register a brace and help K’Ogalo get their campaign off to a winning start after an inconsistent pre-season.

Despite his impressive outing, the winger is determined not to rest on his achievements, insisting that his biggest motivation is to keep improving rather than measure his progress against other players.

“The most important thing has been to be better than I was yesterday. Last season, there was a level I reached, and the most important thing now is to make sure I am better than I was previously. That is my guiding point,” Musa said.

The winger added that maintaining this mentality throughout the campaign would be key to his development, explaining that even small improvements from one day to the next could make a significant difference.

“If yesterday I was a little bit good, then the next day I have to be better. That is the most important thing,” he added.

Musa also believes the extended off-season, which followed the delay to the league’s kick-off, gave the players additional time to work on their game and prepare for the new campaign.

With the break providing an opportunity to sharpen their fitness and address areas that needed improvement, the winger is hopeful that the extra preparation time will translate into better performances on the pitch.

“The off-season has been long because the league kick-off was delayed. I think it gave us more time to do a thing or two,” he explained.

Gor Mahia entered the new season under pressure to make a strong statement after an inconsistent pre-season, with expectations high following their success in the previous campaign.

The 22-time Kenyan champions responded by producing four goals against Murang’a SEAL, although conceding twice also highlighted areas head coach Charles Akonnor will want his side to address as the season progresses.

For Musa, however, the immediate priority was securing maximum points and building momentum ahead of the challenges that lie ahead.

The winger also had a message for those who may have begun questioning Gor Mahia’s ability to defend their title, insisting that writing off the record Kenyan champions so early would be a mistake.

“People writing us off early forget that this is Gor Mahia, so nothing much,” he said.

Musa stressed the importance of getting off to a positive start, particularly after the ups and downs experienced during the club’s pre-season preparations.

“It is important to start on a high because we had an up-and-down pre-season, and it was important to get the first win in the first match,” he added.

With his opening-day brace already behind him, Musa will now be looking to build on that performance and turn his personal ambition into a consistent run of form.
