This is because even though they already have their golden ticket to the AFCON 2027 tournament as co-hosts, CAF rules mandate that they still lace up their boots for the qualification rounds to ensure competitive match fitness and tournament balance.

It also keeps the overall qualification calendar structured and fair across the continent.

While Kenya’s spot in the finals is 100% guaranteed regardless of where they finish in the group, their presence reshapes the stakes for their opponents. This means only the highest-ranked team outside Kenya will advance from Group D to join them at the big dance.

And thus, the former Manchester United forwards coach will look to test his squad’s style of play as they begin this campaign in the qualifiers before the tournament gets underway next year.

On that note, Kenya heads into this encounter carrying mixed form from their June friendly matches, where they shook off a 1-1 draw against Lesotho before comprehensively dismantling them 4-0 in the second leg.

Keen to build on that clinical four-goal display, the hosts must first brush off a disruptive player strike over delayed allowances from those summer windows, which the Ministry of Sports hastily resolved just 48 hours before kick-off.

On the other hand, the visiting Red Sea Camels arrive fresh off a stunning diaspora-fuelled preliminary victory against Eswatini and carry a historic psychological edge, having previously shocked Kenya in Nairobi exactly two decades ago.

And thus, they will be hoping to topple a Kenya side with nothing to lose and emerge as the team that finishes highest in the group to book their slot for the 2027 edition.

The two sides will lock horns on Saturday, September 26, at Nyaaayo National Stadium, with kick-off set for 4pm East Africa Time.

The visitors enter this crucial AFCON 2027 qualifier in Nairobi facing immense non-sporting and structural hurdles, with plenty of concerns beyond the usual team news.

Following the defection of seven home-based players who sought asylum in South Africa, the federation has overhauled its selection strategy, naming 27 overseas-based diaspora players and just three locals to prevent further disappearances.

For Eritrea, the challenge will be significant. On the other side, Kenya will also be taking to the field with little to be proud of regarding their preparations, as their match fitness will be something to watch closely.

Since the team entered camp earlier this week,  as of the time of writing this preview, the squad had not had any fruitful training sessions as they remained on strike demanding their outstanding allowances from the Ministry of Sports.

On Thursday, the government communicated that everything had been resolved, and the team had also agreed to return to training, only for them to change their position later in the day, citing that their payments had not been fully settled.

Kenya holds the historical upper hand in their overall head-to-head record against Eritrea, claiming five wins compared to Eritrea’s three, with one draw shared between them.

Eritrea has won the last three consecutive meetings between the two nations, stretching back more than 20 years.

Football Kenya Federation has released ticketing information to ensure a seamless purchasing process for supporters. Regular terrace tickets have been priced at KSh 300, while VIP admission is available at KSh 1,000.

Fans can watch the Kenya vs Eritrea AFCON 2027 Qualifier through several broadcasters. In the MENA region and parts of Europe, the US and the South Pacific, beIN Sports holds the rights.

CANAL+ will show the match exclusively in French across more than 30 French-speaking Sub-Saharan African countries.

Free-to-air options include SABC in South Africa and Azam in Tanzania. KBC has not confirmed coverage, but as Kenya’s national broadcaster, it is expected to air the match.

Kenya has lost all three of their most recent matches against Eritrea, and considering they have not trained at all during the week leading up to the game, it could be a difficult outing for them if they are to produce a positive result.

And thus, Eritrea could have the upper hand in this clash as the favourites to narrowly win, knowing that Kenya has nothing to lose here other than pride.

For Eritrea, however, victory is crucial to keeping their journey towards the 2027 AFCON alive.
