Tusker settle for stalemate in Rwanda after Al-Ahli Madani comeback in CAF Confederation Cup first leg

• Tusker were forced to a 2-2 draw by Al-Ahli Wad Madani in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round.

• Tusker had taken a two-goal lead through Mbaoma, only for Al-Samany Al-Sawi to also grab a brace and rescue a stalemate for the Sudanese side.

Tusker FC surrendered a two-goal cushion as Al-Ahli Wad Madani staged a second-half comeback on Sunday evening to force a 2-2 CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round draw at the Kigali Pele Stadium in Rwanda.

Tusker thought they had the game in the bag after their new import, Victor Mbaoma, scored a brace in the first half, only for the Sudanese side to stage a remarkable comeback.

The Nigeria international managed to open the deadlock from the spot in the 11th minute after he was fouled inside the box.

Ian Simiyu had crossed the ball between the Madani defenders as Mbaoma made the turn to take his shot, but he was brought down. He stepped up to take the spot-kick, and his paneka found the back of the net to give his side the lead.

Tusker would double their advantage, with the former APR man, familiar with the venue, grabbing his brace just before the final minutes of the first half.

It came after Chrispine Erambo managed to win the ball from the Madani player and found Simiyu on the right wing.

Simiyu then swung in a volleyed cross into the box, where Mbaoma was perfectly positioned to meet it with a header and give his side a two-goal cushion.

But the second half was a completely different story for the 12-time SportPesa League champions, who were caught napping defensively.

Al-Samany Al-Sawi pulled one back just four minutes before the hour mark, and later converted a late penalty his side earned from a clumsy challenge by a Brewers defender just inside the box.

However, the result gives Tusker the advantage as they were playing away, and they will now be at home on Saturday, 12 September 2026, in Nairobi, Kenya, for the second leg, hoping to put on another good show in front of their fans.

The aggregate winner will advance to the second preliminary round, where they will face either Al-Ghazala SC Wau of South Sudan or Singida Black Stars of Tanzania.
