Harambee Stars midfielder Timothy Ouma made his competitive debut for Charlton Athletic on Wednesday night, featuring for 66 minutes as the English Championship side suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Ouma, who recently joined Charlton on a season-long loan from Czech Republic side Slavia Prague after spending part of last season with Polish club Lech Poznan, was handed a starting berth by head coach Nathan Jones as the Addicks made a number of changes to the team that defeated West Ham United in their previous outing.
The former Nairobi City Stars midfielder lined up in Charlton’s midfield alongside captain Greg Docherty and Harvey Knibbs as the visitors looked to cause an upset against the Premier League outfit at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, Charlton’s plans were disrupted early in the contest after suffering a double injury setback inside the opening 15 minutes.
Kenyan defender Collins Sichenje, who was also named in the starting XI, was forced off on a stretcher after appearing to suffer a knee injury. Danny McNamara was introduced in his place, while Billy Koumetio also had to leave the pitch after picking up an injury, with Lloyd Jones coming on.
Despite the setbacks, Charlton showed glimpses of attacking intent during the first half. Greg Docherty tested Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský with a powerful effort from distance, while Nathan Asiimwe came close with a header following a corner.
Tottenham gradually took control of proceedings and eventually broke the deadlock in the 41st minute through Mikey Moore. The youngster’s effort from outside the box found its way through goalkeeper Tiernan Brooks to put the hosts ahead.
The North London side doubled their advantage just three minutes later, with Dominic Solanke capitalising on a defensive error. Ouma’s attempted clearance inside the box fell kindly to the Tottenham striker, who made no mistake from close range.
Charlton went into the break two goals down and found it increasingly difficult to maintain possession after the restart as Tottenham turned up the pressure.
Ouma’s night came to an end in the 66th minute when Jones made a triple substitution, bringing on Alan Mwamba, Miles Leaburn and Joe Rankin-Costello.
Kevin Danso immediately made an impact after coming off the bench, heading home Tottenham’s third goal in the 67th minute. Savio then added a fourth in the 82nd minute before Ben Davies completed the rout three minutes later.
Charlton managed to grab a consolation goal late in the match when Jones rose highest to head home Rankin-Costello’s corner in the 87th minute.
The 5-1 defeat brought Charlton’s Carabao Cup campaign to an end, although the fixture provided Ouma with valuable experience against top-flight opposition.
For the Kenyan midfielder, the appearance marks another important step in his development as he looks to establish himself at Charlton following his move from Slavia Prague.
Ouma will now turn his attention to the Championship, where Charlton return to action on Saturday against Preston North End at The Valley. The Kenyan will be hoping to build on his debut and push for more regular minutes as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, Charlton will be hoping for a better defensive display in their next outing after conceding five goals against a Tottenham side that punished their mistakes with ruthless efficiency.
