Kenyan midfielder Emmanuel Ziro made his competitive debut for Manchester United Under-18s on Saturday as the Reds opened their U18 Premier League North campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Carrington.
Ziro was handed a starting berth by manager Darren Fletcher as United faced last season’s top two in what was an eagerly anticipated Manchester derby.
Despite the disappointing result, the youngster showed glimpses of his attacking quality and was involved in several promising moves during his time on the pitch.
The match started at a high intensity, with United looking the more composed side for long periods of the opening half. Fletcher’s side pressed high up the pitch and looked to move the ball quickly through midfield, with Ziro operating in an advanced attacking role alongside Jaume Camacho-Sidos and Camron Mpofu.

The Kenyan was involved in one of United’s best openings of the first half when his delivery found Camacho-Sidos inside the box. The forward’s effort was denied at close range by City goalkeeper Ben Vickery.
United continued to threaten as the half progressed, with Junior Brown causing problems down the left flank. Ziro’s presence in the final third gave the home side another attacking outlet as they attempted to break down City’s defensive block.
The youngster came close to opening his account shortly after the restart. Following good build-up play from Brown and Mpofu, the ball was worked across the box and Ziro met it with a first-time left-footed effort, only to curl his attempt over the crossbar.
It was one of several promising moments for the Kenyan, who also tried his luck again as United maintained their attacking momentum early in the second half.
However, City gradually grew into the contest and eventually found the breakthrough in the 66th minute.
Jacob Wain advanced down the right before delivering a low cross towards the near post, where Teddie Lamb got ahead of his marker to fire past Charlie Hardy and give City the lead.
United responded by making their first change, with Edson De Jonge-Seiros replacing Ziro in the 67th minute.
The Reds continued pushing for an equaliser and created several opportunities late in the game. Vickery, however, stood between United and a share of the spoils, producing crucial saves as the hosts increased the pressure.
United came closest in stoppage time when the ball fell to Brown, whose powerful effort on the bounce was brilliantly kept out by Vickery at his near post. Yuel Helafu also forced another save from the City goalkeeper in the closing moments.
Despite dominating significant spells of the game, United were unable to find the decisive touch in front of goal and were condemned to a narrow defeat.
For Ziro, the appearance represents an important milestone in his development after being included in United’s first-year scholarship intake. His starting role against City provides an early indication that he will be part of Fletcher’s plans as the Under-18 campaign progresses.
The Kenyan midfielder will now hope to build on his debut and earn more minutes as United look to turn their promising performances into results in the coming fixtures.
