Tyler Onyango’s long search for a permanent football home has finally come to an end after the Kenyan-eligible midfielder completed a move to English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a three-year contract.
The 23-year-old joins the Owls as a free agent after leaving Premier League outfit Everton at the expiry of his contract in June, bringing to a close a journey that began in the Toffees’ academy and included senior appearances in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.
For Onyango, the move represents far more than just another transfer. After several loan spells away from Goodison Park, he now has the opportunity to establish himself at a club that believes in his long-term potential.

“I’m absolutely delighted. What a club and a great opportunity for me. I can’t wait to get going,” Onyango told the club’s official website after completing the move.
“It’s been a great first few days and I’m really happy.
“I know the project and the direction the club is going. I’ve seen what’s happened over the last few years and for me it feels like a new chapter. This is a club moving in the right direction and that’s something any player would be excited to be part of.”
The midfielder also revealed that the warm reception from his new teammates made settling in much easier.
“As a young player, to join a club that has big ambition is massive. I know a couple of the lads already but the rest of the group have taken to me really well. It’s a really welcoming club and somewhere I want to stay and be a part of.”
Sheffield Wednesday see Onyango as more than just another midfield recruit. His ability to operate as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, right-back and centre-back offers manager Henrik Pedersen valuable tactical flexibility ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Sporting Director Simon Wilson explained why the club moved quickly to secure the Kenyan-eligible midfielder.
“In our circumstances, we have to look for value and as a 23-year-old player with an elite background, a unique physical profile, and that can play multiple positions, Tyler represents a good opportunity for the football club,” Wilson said.
“He is like Louie Barry in some senses – very good players at Premier League teams can suffer by going on multiple loans and never having that feeling they belong somewhere and can call it home.
“The long-term deal offers Tyler this possibility and now gives us both time to get our heads down and make it a success.”
Onyango made his senior Everton debut in January 2021 against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup before making his Premier League debut later that year against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
In search of regular first-team football, he later gained valuable experience during loan spells at Burton Albion, Forest Green Rovers and Stockport County, experiences that have helped shape him into a more mature player ahead of this latest chapter.
The move will also be closely followed by Kenyan football fans. Although Onyango has represented England at youth level, he remains eligible to play for Harambee Stars through his Kenyan heritage.
The midfielder is yet to earn his senior Kenya debut but has previously made it clear that he is willing to represent the national team whenever the opportunity arises, stating that he is ready to answer the call if selected.
With regular Championship football now within reach at Hillsborough, the transfer could significantly boost his chances of finally making his Harambee Stars debut as Kenya continue building towards future continental and World Cup qualification campaigns.
For both Sheffield Wednesday and Kenyan football supporters, the hope is that this permanent move will provide the stability Onyango has been searching for and allow one of Kenya’s brightest overseas prospects to fulfil his considerable potential.
