The chase for Dala 7s glory is officially down to eight teams after an absorbing opening day in Kisumu, with the final round of pool matches separating the genuine title contenders from those left to reflect on missed opportunities.
By the close of play at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Zetech Oaks, Kenya Harlequins, Daystar Falcons and Strathmore Leos had punched their tickets to the Cup quarter-finals, joining KCB Rugby, Menengai Oilers, Mwamba RFC and Kabras Sugar, who had already secured safe passage earlier in the afternoon.
While some sides cruised through with unbeaten records, others had to battle until the final whistle before their knockout dreams became reality.
Defending champions KCB Rugby wrapped up top spot in Pool A, although not without a scare.

The Bankers were stretched by a spirited MMUST side that refused to back down, forcing KCB to dig deep before George Ooro’s late try salvaged a 19-19 draw. The result was enough to keep the defending champions unbeaten and on top of the standings with seven points.
Despite their brave display, MMUST’s campaign came to an end after finishing third on four points.
The second qualification place from the pool belonged to Zetech Oaks, who survived a determined Impala RFC challenge to claim a 19-14 victory. Their disciplined performance earned them six points and a place in the last eight, while Impala exited the competition without registering a win.
Pool B belonged to Menengai Oilers from start to finish.
The Nakuru outfit completed a flawless group-stage campaign with a comfortable 26-0 victory over Mombasa Rugby Club, making it three wins from three and finishing as the only side in the pool with a maximum nine points.
Behind them, Kenya Harlequins recovered impressively from their opening-day setback against Oilers to book their quarter-final berth. Quins brushed aside KU Blak Blad 26-7 in a composed display, finishing second with six points to keep their title ambitions alive.
The most dramatic qualification battle unfolded in Pool C.
Mwamba RFC continued their excellent run by defeating hosts Kisumu RFC 26-17, completing a perfect pool campaign and heading into the knockout rounds with confidence after collecting all nine available points.
The fight for the remaining ticket went right to the final standings.
Daystar Falcons edged Nondescripts RFC 12-5 in a tense encounter that proved decisive. With Daystar, Nondies and Kisumu all ending the day on three points, points difference came into play, allowing Daystar to sneak into the quarter-finals while the other two sides fell agonisingly short.
Kabras Sugar once again underlined why many consider them favourites for the title.
Fresh from putting more than 50 points past Embu RFC earlier in the day, the Sugarmen closed their pool campaign with another commanding performance, blanking Nakuru RFC 33-0 to finish with a perfect nine-point haul.
Strathmore Leos ensured Pool D would send two Nairobi sides into the knockout rounds after dismantling Embu RFC 53-0. The emphatic victory secured second place on six points, ending Nakuru’s hopes despite their solitary victory earlier in the competition.
With the pool stage now complete, the focus shifts entirely to knockout rugby, where there is no margin for error.
KCB Rugby will continue their title defence, Kabras Sugar carry the tournament’s most feared attack into the last eight, Menengai Oilers and Mwamba RFC remain unbeaten, while Zetech Oaks, Kenya Harlequins, Daystar Falcons and Strathmore Leos have earned the chance to upset the favourites as the race for the Dala 7s crown enters its decisive phase.
