Gor Mahia secured their place in the CECAFA Kagame Cup semifinals after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine at the Kigali Pelé Stadium, coupled with APR FC’s dramatic 2-1 win over Vipers SC in the final group stage fixture played concurrently at Amahoro Stadium.
Gor’s Head Coach Charles Akonnor reshuffled his starting squad, seeking an immediate response after their previous defeat to Vipers and aiming to recapture the form that saw them dismantle host side APR in their opening match.
Gor Mahia started off on the front foot, pressing high from the very first minute. Their efforts paid dividends just four minutes in when Patrick Essombe made an explosive run down the right side and delivered a powerful cross.

Garde Républicaine goalkeeper Liban Mohamed Said mishandled the delivery, allowing the unmarked Paul Okoth to tap home into the empty net for the opening goal.
K’Ogalo maintained the pressure as Enock Machaka attempted a low shot from the edge of the area in the 15th minute.
However, Gor Mahia were forced into an early structural change in the 24th minute following a heavy challenge, with Samuel Kapen coming on to replace the injured Essombe. At the half-hour mark, Machaka laid off a crisp pass to Okoth, who fired wide from inside the box.
Four minutes later, a cross from Shariff Musa following a short corner found Alpha Onyango on the edge of the box, but he skied his effort over the bar.
Garde’s best opportunity of the half came from a flicked corner kick, but Sadik Aden Djama’s header was too feeble to trouble Byrne Omondi in the Gor Mahia goal.
At the start of the second half, Gor Mahia continued their attacking onslaught, though Shariff missed the target from close range.
The Kenyan champions suffered another injury blow in the 58th minute when first-half substitute Samuel Kapen was stretchered off to the medical room for treatment, forcing Ben Stanley Omondi onto the pitch.
The match grew increasingly physical, culminating in a red card for Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango in the 68th minute for violent conduct challenge.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Gor Mahia created another clear opening minutes later, but Shariff shot wide from close range. Garde Républicaine pushed late to capitalize on their numerical advantage, but the K’Ogalo backline held firm to preserve the 1-0 win.
Gor Mahia’s semifinal qualification was officially confirmed later in the evening at the Amahoro Stadium, where APR FC upset group leaders Vipers SC 2-1.
The result left the top teams tied on points, allowing Gor Mahia to advance to the last four on superior goal difference.
