Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, has shrugged off any pressure surrounding the defence of his 100m title at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, stating that he has nothing left to prove at that level.
Omanyala is among the 94-member Kenyan contingent set to compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, running from July 23 to August 2.
He made history on August 3, 2022, by winning the men’s 100m final at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with a time of 10.02 seconds.
His commanding victory made him the first Kenyan in 60 years to win the Commonwealth 100m title, comfortably beating defending champion Akani Simbine of South Africa.

Now, after being out of action for some weeks, Omanyala returns to the track with his title on the line.
Speaking to SportPesa News Senior Editor Stephen Ochieng’ ahead of next week’s race, Omanyala said he feels strong and ready for the challenge.
“I’ve been away from competition for some weeks. It’s exciting to be back competing and back at the Commonwealth Games, where I think this is what built me. This is where the brand started becoming bigger and bigger. So I’m glad to be back and excited for the competitions next week,” he explained.
While reflecting on how winning gold in 2022 was a defining moment in his career, Omanyala believes he is now chasing even bigger ambitions and has nothing left to prove while defending his crown.
“We’ve built a brand, we’ve built some incredible memories as well. So coming back here, I’ll be honest, I have nothing to prove. I’ve won it all in terms of the level that I am competing at. So now I’m just setting bigger goals, but of course defending this Commonwealth title will be huge for me,” he added.

He also explained how he prepared for the event, revealing that the demanding racing schedule can sometimes become overwhelming, making it necessary to take a break and reset.
“I mean, sometimes you need to take some time off because it’s overwhelming, you know, back-to-back wins, back-to-back sub-10s, back-to-back travels. You don’t even get time to celebrate. You’re winning this week, then the next week you’re competing somewhere else.
“So sometimes you need some rest. For me, these three weeks have been incredible. I’ve had a great training camp, great recovery, just taking some time off and giving my mind a break as well. I’m really feeling energized for the rest of the season.”
On Monday, July 27, he will compete in the 100m heats, aiming to qualify for Tuesday’s semifinals before returning later the same day for the final.
