Omanyala targets Commonwealth crown defence after Xiamen Diamond League win

Kenya’s sprint king Ferdinand Omanyala has set his sights firmly on defending his Commonwealth Games crown later this year, following a commanding victory in the men’s 100m at the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday night.

Africa’s fastest man laid down a massive statement of intent at the Egret Stadium, storming to a season-best time of 9.94 seconds.

The win capped off a highly successful Asian tour and served as sweet revenge against South African rival Gift Leotlela, who had narrowly beaten the Kenyan just a week prior at the season opener in Shanghai.

Omanyala exploded from the blocks, executing a flawless drive phase to pull away from an incredibly stacked field.

By the 90-meter mark, the Kenyan star had established enough daylight to raise his arm in early celebration, crossing the line comfortably ahead of Leotlela (10.00) and American two-time world medalist Trayvon Bromell (10.03).

“I enjoyed it to be honest, it was so fun,” Omanyala said in his post-race trackside interview. “I got a good start, a good transition into the top-end sprint, and I feel nice, I feel great. There were a lot of very good runners in that race, I’m just excited. It’s my second Diamond League win ever, so I have to be excited. This trip has been very fruitful.”

When quizzed about his early, Usain Bolt-esque celebration ten meters before the tape, Omanyala grinned: “That’s what we need to bring back to the sport! But I’m just looking forward to more wins in the future.”

The 9.94-second performance continues a blazing, highly consistent start to the 2026 season for the 30-year-old sprinter, marking his fifth consecutive sub-10 second run of the year. It represents a massive resurgence for Omanyala, who has looked entirely revitalized after a difficult indoor campaign.

“We’ve been having some great times in training and just keeping it going because we’ve had a very nice preseason,” Omanyala explained. “Coming into the indoors, we didn’t really have a good time, but I’m happy with where we’re going now.”

With his rhythm fully restored and the global track season shifting gears, the Kenyan powerhouse made no secret of his ultimate objectives for the rest of the year, identifying his title defense as a top priority.

“The mission for this year is defending the Commonwealth Championship title and then later on, the ultimate championships,” he declared.

Omanyala is scheduled to feature across several highly anticipated stops on the European leg of the Wanda Diamond League circuit.

He will test himself against elite global fields in Rabat (May 31), Rome (June 4), Paris (June 28), and a crucial pre-Championship showdown in Monaco (July 10) before officially arriving in Glasgow for the Commonwealth games with the event scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
