Portugal Predicted lineup vs Croatia/IMAGE FIFA

Portugal head into the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 determined to keep their title ambitions alive when they face Croatia in a heavyweight European showdown at BMO Field in Toronto.

Roberto Martínez’s men missed the opportunity to finish top of Group K after being held by Colombia, a result that handed them a far more demanding knockout assignment.

Instead of facing Ghana, Portugal must now overcome a Croatia side that has built a reputation for thriving on the biggest stage, having reached the 2018 World Cup final and the semifinals four years later.

Portugal Predicted lineup vs Croatia

Despite the difficult draw, confidence remains high in the Portuguese camp. The Seleção das Quinas have one of the tournament’s most balanced squads, blending experienced leaders with technically gifted youngsters, and Martínez is expected to stick with a largely unchanged side for the knockout encounter.

Diogo Costa is set to continue between the posts after producing several important saves during the draw with Colombia. The FC Porto goalkeeper has looked composed throughout the tournament and will be expected to command his penalty area against Croatia’s experienced attack.

The defensive unit is unlikely to change. João Cancelo should start at right-back, where his overlapping runs and quality deliveries provide an additional attacking outlet. On the opposite flank, Nuno Mendes will be tasked with stretching Croatia’s defensive shape while also containing threats on the counterattack.

Rúben Dias is expected to marshal the backline once again alongside Renato Veiga. Dias’ leadership, aerial dominance and reading of the game will be vital against a Croatian attack led by the experienced Ante Budimir, while Veiga’s calmness in possession has strengthened Portugal’s build-up play throughout the competition.

In midfield, João Neves is tipped to return after missing the starting lineup against Colombia. His energy, aggressive pressing and ability to recover possession make him an ideal partner for Vitinha, whose composure on the ball and progressive passing allow Portugal to dictate the tempo from deep areas.

Further forward, Pedro Neto is expected to keep his place on the right wing after troubling defenders with his pace and direct running.

Bruno Fernandes will once again operate as the creative hub behind the striker, looking to unlock Croatia’s defence with incisive through balls and intelligent movement between the lines.

João Félix is also likely to retain his place on the left despite a quiet display in the previous match. Martínez will hope the talented forward can rediscover the confidence he showed earlier in the tournament and provide greater support in the final third.

Leading the attack will be Cristiano Ronaldo, who remains Portugal’s focal point despite fierce competition for the tournament’s Golden Boot. The veteran captain continues to deliver on the biggest occasions and will be eager to inspire his country into the Round of 16 with another clinical performance.

With an experienced spine, technically gifted midfielders and attacking quality across the pitch, Portugal will believe they have enough to overcome Croatia, although they know there is little room for error once the knockout stages begin.
