- Portugal coach Roberto Martínez fiercely rejected critics calling to bench Cristiano Ronaldo after a quiet opening match, insisting the 41-year-old captain starts purely on merit and tactical value.
- Martínez hinted at upcoming lineup adjustments to integrate forward Gonçalo Ramos alongside Ronaldo rather than replacing him.
- Center-back Rúben Dias dismissed the external media backlash as “noise,” stating the squad remains united and focused ahead of their crucial Group K match against Uzbekistan.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has fiercely defended his decision to field and retain Cristiano Ronaldo, launching a counter-offensive against critics during the pre-match press conference on Monday.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s second Group K fixture against tournament debutants Uzbekistan, Martínez faced a barrage of questions following a disappointing 1-1 opening draw against DR Congo.
The lackluster display, which saw an isolated Ronaldo manage just 25 touches across 90 minutes without a single shot on target, had sparked widespread public critics for the 41-year-old captain to be dropped to the bench.

Martínez, however, forcefully rejected the narrative that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner starts matches based purely on status or political weight within the squad.
“Cristiano is in the national team on merit,” Martínez told reporters.
“Nobody gets into the national team by just having a name. On the field, he’s a player who draws defenders and creates space for others, and for us, that’s really important.”
While the Spanish tactician refused to condemn his talismanic forward, he openly acknowledged that the rigid, predictable attacking structure deployed in the opening match required adjustments.
With qualification to the knockout stages under unexpected threat, Martínez revealed that a tactical refresh is imminent, explicitly addressing the demand to incorporate Paris Saint-Germain forward Gonçalo Ramos.
Instead of a straight positional swap, Martínez suggested that tactical fluidity and a multi-man front line might be the key to unlocking packed defensive units.
“There are no fixed lineups moving forward,” Martínez announced. “What we needed was to add Gonçalo Ramos without making it in a way that it would become even more of a difficult line. As you know in football, the straight line is not the quickest way.”

The escalating pressure has prompted the Portuguese locker room to build a defensive perimeter around their captain. Speaking alongside the manager, center-back Rúben Dias insisted that the external panic has not breached the team hotel.
“The criticism is not significant for us, it’s noise and part of the competition,” Dias stated calmly. “It always happens if you have a match that doesn’t go well. We’re closing ourselves off from unnecessary criticism. Our job is to go out there, play, and send a message that the group is strong and united despite the result.”
Portugal returns to the pitch in Houston knowing that anything less than a victory against Uzbekistan could turn a bumpy start into a full-scale World Cup disaster.
