Spain vs Cape Verde
  • Spain vs Cape Verde: Debutants held European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • The match was played at Atlanta Stadium on Monday, June 15, 2026.
  • Spain squandered several chances despite creating numerous opportunities, while Cape Verde’s defence remained resolute throughout the contest.

Debutants Cape Verde pulled off a lifeline performance to grab their historic first ever point in the FIFA World Cup, as they set up a disciplined defence to stifle tournament favourites Spain for a 0-0 draw on Monday evening.

Without a doubt, Cape Verde walking out of that Atlanta stadium with a single point from their Group H opener against the European champions felt like a victory, while for Spain it will definitely sting like a loss given the glorious chances they squandered across the 90 minutes.

Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha and their backline absolutely deserve credit for this stalemate, thanks to their sensational display and how they managed to neutralise Spain’s attacking threats.

Spain vs Cape Verde

After more than half an hour of Spain lacking the cutting edge to tilt the game in their favour despite dominating possession, they finally crafted a golden opportunity in the 38th minute.

Pedri spread play to Marc Cucurella, who volleyed into the box. Borges did well to head clear, but the ball dropped onto Pedri’s laces, he introduced it to leather, the connection lovely, forcing Vozinha to tip over.

The flag then went up, Cucurella was offside, but it was a decent effort and save.

Spain desperately wanted to go into the break at least a goal up, and they carved out another brilliant chance.

Cucurella ran in behind, Spain were finding space, and Rodri clipped a gorgeous cross kick that found him.

He probably should have gone for goal, but deciding the angle was too narrow or playing it safe, he headed back to Ferran Torres, who simply had to score except he crashed it against the bar.

Then, when the rebound fell to Oyarzabal, his looping header forced Vozinha to tip over the top. That’s more like it from Spain, but the Cape Verde keeper looked in the mood.

Cucurella looked lively just hours after his new move to Spanish giants Real Madrid was confirmed, and he got even better, this time pulling wide and smashing a first time pass from Pedri into the box.

At the near post, Gavi slid in but missed connection. Ferran then shot low but, under pressure from Lopes, could not guide it far enough away from Vozinha, who dived to save.

The second half simply mirrored the first, with Spain coach Luis de la Fuente bringing on his heavy hitters to boost the attack including Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, but the Cape Verde defence did not waver one bit until the final whistle, securing that precious point against the European champions.

Now Spain will look to bounce back next week on Sunday night when they take on Saudi Arabia, while Cape Verde, inspired by this result, will carry that energy into their match against Uruguay in the early hours of Monday.
