APS Bomet FC head coach Sammy Omollo has revealed details of a phone call he received from Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor before their decisive SportPesa League clash against AFC Leopards at Kericho Green Stadium.
Heading into the encounter, the stakes were extremely high for both sides. APS Bomet desperately needed victory to guarantee their SportPesa League survival for next season, while AFC Leopards were chasing maximum points to keep their title ambitions alive.
Coach Fred Ambani and his charges knew that anything short of victory would hand the league title to their eternal rivals Gor Mahia, who were sitting four points clear with two matches left to play.
Leopards were also aiming to move within a single point of Gor Mahia as they sought to end a 27-year wait for the league crown, having last lifted the title in 1998.

Akonnor’s phone call to Pamzo that sent Gor Mahia back to the SportPesa League throne
Speaking to Big Sports Africa after the match, Pamzo disclosed that Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor personally called him before kickoff and expressed confidence in APS Bomet’s ability to upset Ingwe.
“I got a phone call before our game. It came from Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor and he told me he believes in my players and also me,” said Pamzo.
“So I told him, ‘Coach, I won’t let you down,’ and that’s how we gave Gor Mahia the league. I got a call from him and I think Charles Akonnor has done a lot there at Gor Mahia and they deserved to win the league. I told him in our game against AFC Leopards we would win, and that’s how Gor Mahia have now clinched the league title.”

Pamzo, a former Gor Mahia defender and club legend, stayed true to his word as his side produced a spirited performance to beat AFC Leopards 2-1 in a match that ultimately sealed the championship for K’Ogalo.
APS Bomet captain Philip Wasai emerged as the hero of the afternoon after netting a quickfire brace in the second half. Wasai broke the deadlock in the 60th minute before striking again three minutes later to stun AFC Leopards and silence the travelling supporters.
Leopards attempted a late comeback and pulled one back in the 87th minute courtesy of an own goal, but APS Bomet held firm to secure all three points in front of their home fans.

The victory not only confirmed Gor Mahia as SportPesa League champions, but also secured APS Bomet’s top-flight status for another season. The win lifted the club to 10th place on the standings with 43 points from 32 matches.
APS Bomet have now registered 11 wins, 10 draws and 12 defeats this season, scoring 36 goals and conceding 34 ahead of their final league fixture against Tusker FC.
For Pamzo, the victory carried extra significance. Having previously served both as a player and a coach at Gor Mahia, helping his former club reclaim the league title was a moment that added another memorable chapter to his football journey.
