Southampton have been kicked out of the Championship play-off final after admitting that they spied on three clubs during the 2025/26 Championship season.

The EFL charged Saints with unlawfully watching Oxford United and Ipswich Town training sessions, as well as filming Middlesbrough in preparation for the play-off semifinals.

Despite the breaches, Southampton failed to win either of the three games they have been charged over. They lost 2-1 at Oxford, drew 2-2 against Ipswich at St. Mary’s and finally a barren draw at Boro.

Middlesbrough, who were beaten by Southampton in the semi-final, have been reinstated and will now play Hull City for the final spot in the English Premier League on May 23.

In addition to being kicked out of the play-offs, Southampton have also been handed a four-point deduction for next season. They have already appealed the decision but the independent commission already made its ruling on Tuesday.

The Saints admitted to “multiple breaches of EFL regulations related to the unauthorized filming of other clubs’ training,” said the EFL.

“We are in discussion with all three clubs regarding the implications of the decision and will make a further announcement in due course,” the statement continued.

Middlesbrough welcomed the outcome and went on to state that they are already in preparation for the play-off final against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday.

“As a club, we are now focused on the match against Hull. Ticket information will be available to our supporters shortly,” Boro stated.

Middlesbrough have not returned to the English top flight since the 2016/17 season and seem eager to win what is dubbed “the most expensive football match” this weekend.

They will take on a Hull City side who also left the Premier League the same season, with the stage set for a potential mouthwatering play-off final on Saturday.

After a spying case at the 2024 Olympic Games, three members of the Canada staff including the head coach received a year ban from all football by FIFA.

Despite the appeal from Southampton, it is unlikely that the EFL will announce anything different regarding the final this Saturday.
