Egyptian giants Zamalek SC will once again look to lean on their rich continental pedigree when they host Algeria’s USM Alger in the decisive second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday night.
The highly anticipated showdown is set to kick off at 10:00 PM EAT, with the White Knights aiming to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and lift their third Confederation Cup crown in front of what is expected to be a near-capacity crowd in Cairo.
The first leg in Algeria produced late drama and controversy after Zamalek thought they had snatched a crucial stoppage-time equalizer through Juan Bezerra.
However, following a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up before the referee pointed to the penalty spot deep into added time. Ahmed Khaldi converted in the 98th minute to hand USM Alger a slender advantage heading into the return leg.

That narrow defeat has left the tie delicately poised, but history offers plenty of encouragement for the Egyptian side. Zamalek have built a reputation for delivering under pressure in African competitions, especially when forced into comeback situations at home.
The Cairo-based outfit won the Confederation Cup in both 2019 and 2024 after losing the first leg away from home. In 2019, they fell 1-0 to Morocco’s RS Berkane before responding with a 1-0 victory in Cairo and eventually winning on penalties.
Five years later, they repeated a similar script against the same opponents, overturning a 2-1 away loss with a narrow 1-0 victory at home to clinch the trophy on away goals.
Beyond continental glory, there is also huge financial motivation attached to Saturday’s encounter. The winners of this year’s competition will pocket a record USD 4 million prize money, the highest in the history of the CAF Confederation Cup, while the runners-up will receive USD 2 million.
Zamalek head into the clash boasting a formidable home record in the competition. The White Knights have lost only once in 24 home matches in the Confederation Cup, winning 17 and drawing six. More impressively, they have never conceded more than once at home in the tournament and have never suffered back-to-back defeats across 50 Confederation Cup games.
However, the hosts will be without Moroccan left-back Mahmoud Bentayg, who is suspended after being sent off for dissent following the controversial VAR incident in the first leg.

Speaking ahead of the match, Zamalek coach Motamed Gamal backed his side’s experience to shine on another big African night.
“Zamalek have experienced, international players who know exactly what is required on these big nights,” Gamal told reporters.
“Many of our players won this title in 2024 and understand the pressure. We respect USM Alger as a formidable opponent, but our preparation is focused on clinical finishing and utilizing our home advantage.”

The Algerian visitors, meanwhile, arrive in Cairo carrying confidence of their own after taking the advantage in the first leg. USM Alger have been one of the most consistent sides in the competition and have lost just once in their last 19 Confederation Cup matches.
The North Africans have also proven difficult to break down against Egyptian opposition, keeping clean sheets in each of their last three meetings against teams from Egypt.
Coach Lamine Ndiaye insisted his players are fully prepared for the intimidating atmosphere expected at Cairo International Stadium and dismissed suggestions that the home crowd could decide the outcome.
“Zamalek are not a side that relies on individual brilliance; they are a cohesive, collective unit,” the Senegalese tactician said.
“As for crowd pressure, football is played 11 versus 11 on the pitch. No fan can step onto the field and score a goal.”
Tonight’s final is expected to deliver a tactical battle, with Zamalek likely to press aggressively from the opening whistle while maintaining defensive balance to avoid conceding an away goal. USM Alger, on the other hand, are expected to sit compactly, frustrate the hosts, and look to exploit spaces on the counterattack and in transition moments.
With continental glory, history and millions in prize money at stake, another dramatic CAF final night awaits in Cairo.
