Clarke Oduor

Clarke Oduor was in action for Grimsby Town as the Mariners suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Salford City in the first leg of the English League Two play-off semi-final at a packed Blundell Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Harambee Stars midfielder started the high-stakes clash and featured for 79 minutes in an entertaining encounter that saw both sides exchange early blows before Salford carried a slim advantage into the return leg.

Grimsby could not have asked for a better start in front of their home supporters. Barely 30 seconds after kick-off, defender Reece Staunton sent the crowd into celebration with a stunning volley from outside the box after Harvey Rodgers’ cross was only partially cleared.

The left-back struck the ball sweetly into the top corner to hand the Mariners an early breakthrough and ignite the sold-out stadium.

Grimsby Town fall narrowly to Salford City

However, Salford responded almost immediately and punished Grimsby’s defensive lapse three minutes later. Kallum Cesay found space inside the area before drilling a low finish beyond goalkeeper Jackson Smith to restore parity in a frantic opening spell.

The visitors gradually gained control in midfield with Kelly N’Mai and Cesay causing problems on the flanks, while Oduor worked tirelessly in the engine room for Grimsby, helping link play between midfield and attack alongside Kieran Green and Geza Turi.

Despite Grimsby creating several promising attacking moves, Salford completed the comeback five minutes before the interval.

Luke Garbutt whipped in a dangerous corner delivery which Ademola Olowu met with a powerful header that took a slight deflection on its way past Smith. Grimsby players protested for offside, claiming Haji Mnoga had obstructed the goalkeeper’s view, but the referee allowed the goal to stand.

Trailing at the break, David Artell’s men returned strongly in the second half and pushed for an equaliser. Jaze Kabia and Justin Amaluzor constantly drove at the Salford backline, while Andy Cook battled aerially against the visitors’ defenders.

Oduor continued to dictate possession and pressed aggressively in midfield before eventually being substituted in the 79th minute for Jamie Walker as Grimsby searched for fresh attacking impetus.

The Mariners kept piling pressure late on, with Green and Charles Vernam both forcing blocks from the Salford defence, but the visitors remained compact at the back and held on to their slender advantage.

The result leaves Grimsby with work to do ahead of the decisive second leg at the Peninsula Stadium on Friday evening, where a place in the League Two play-off final at Wembley will be at stake.
