Nairobi United consoled their FKF Cup exit with a 1-0 win over Tusker FC on Wednesday evening in a Round 30 SportPesa League clash played at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The NaiBois had suffered a 1–0 defeat last weekend to KCB FC, who knocked them out in the Cup quarterfinals.

That loss ended their hopes of defending the title and returning to the continental stage, where they made history earlier this season by reaching the group stages.

However, Muhadjir Hakizimana’s stunner in the 18th minute of the first half allowed them to sneak into fourth place on the log with 48 points.

They also stretched their unbeaten streak to seven matches, notching three consecutive victories in that run.

On the other end Tusker, who prevailed in the Cup semis via a late goal to beat Ulinzi Stars 2-1, have already been written off in the league title race by their coach.

They will now focus entirely on that Cup for a return to continental action, while their league form has hit a three-match winless skid, managing just one win in their last six outings.

They were the sharper side seven minutes into the game, creating chances that just wouldn’t fall their way.

The first opportunity came down the right wing, where Yakeen Muteheli managed to whip a low cross into the box.

Ian Simiyu tried a shot but missed the target. Two minutes later, they crafted another brilliant chance from a corner.

Bless Bakai had a golden opportunity, free inside the box, only to fire straight at Kevin Oduor’s gloves, who saved comfortably to keep things a cagey affair.

After the Brewers rued their missed chances, Nairobi United carved out a superb opportunity of their own in the 18th minute. A slick move saw Hakizimana slip the ball to Duncan Omalla in the final third.

The Rwandan international then made a clever run off him, and Omalla just nudged the ball into his path. The midfielder unleashed a rocket that flew into the net a fantastic goal to take the lead.

A minute before the half-hour mark, the Naibois conjured up another good chance through Mustapha Kizza, who delivered a teasing cross into the box. This time, Duncan Omalla parried the ball over the bar, denying his side a two-goal cushion.

Nairobi United later carved out an opportunity on the counter-attack. On the right wing, Enock Machaka delivered a brilliant volleyed ball into the box. Benson Omalla was lurking inside and met it with a header that came agonizingly close to doubling the lead, only for the woodwork to deny him.

In the second half, Nairobi United controlled possession, shutting down the Brewers’ charges and denying them any chance to make a difference. That said, the hosts also squandered a few opportunities of their own.
