  • The match is scheduled to start at 1500EAT.
  • K’Ogalo could open up a 9-point gap at the summit with a win.

Kakamega Homeboyz will host league leaders Gor Mahia at the Mumias Sports Complex Stadium on Sunday afternoon in a 25/26 SportPesa League Round 30 encounter with kickoff scheduled for 1500 EAT.

The match comes at a critical point for Gor Mahia who are  looking to cement their lead at the summit while Homeboyz aim to utilize their formidable home advantage to disrupt the champions’ march toward a record-extending 22nd title.

Gor, sitting at the top of the table with 61 points, travel to Kakamega following a morale-boosting 1-0 victory in the Mashemeji Derby.

But their character will be put to the test in the away clash as a victory would effectively put one hand on the trophy, opening a nine-point gap over second-placed AFC Leopards.

Kakamega Homeboyz vs Gor Mahia team news

Kakamega Homebpyz head coach Patrick Odhiambo has confirmed a significant blow to his attacking options, as star forward Oliver Majaka is set to miss the clash due to injury.

Majaka has been the focal point of the Homeboyz’s offense this season, netting 9 goals which places him third on the league’s top scorers log.

The record champions have been handed a major boost with the return of Sylvester Owino. The Harambee Stars defender has been sidelined for six weeks with a lower gastrocnemius injury but is now available for selection.

Key Players to Watch

Kakamega Homeboyz – Glen Masava & Rodgers Ouma

In Majaka’s absence, the creative burden shifts to the midfield. Rodgers Ouma will be tasked with disrupting play with the former Gor Mahia midfielder enjoying a stellar season at Abana Beingo while Glen Masava must find new ways to unlock the defense offensively.

Gor Mahia – Paul Ochuoga and Jackson Dwang

Kogalo’s primary threat in attack has been their explosive right back Paul Ochuoga.

They will aim to replicate that today by giving him space and room to overlap.

Since his signing was completed in January, Dwang Jackson has been impressive and could cause problems in that attacking midfield role if left unchecked.

What the coaches said

Patrick Odhiambo – Kakamega Homeboyz

The Homeboyz tactician was clear that his side is playing for their own ambitions, not to influence the title race for others.

“We want to win all our matches, there’s nothing like helping someone win the league. We want to get a result against Gor Mahia, then when we face AFC Leopards later on where we also want to secure a win. Our team is prepared physically, emotionally, and mentally for this game.”

Charles Akonnor – Gor Mahia

The Ghanaian gaffer insisted that despite the euphoria of winning the Mashemeji Derby, the job is not yet done.

“I said in my last press conference before the AFC match that the run is not over, even with a win against AFC Leopards. We believe that it continues until the last match when we are certain we have secured the title.

On Sunday, we will be ready. We will try in to change a few things from the AFC Leopards match; we hope to be sound defensively and look to attack the game. It will surely be a different plan.”
