Mwamba RFC Ladies completed a historic five-peat, clinching the Kenya Cup title for the fifth straight season after beating Kenya Harlequins Ladies 30-20 on Saturday, May 2, at the Goan Institute.

Their supremacy has stretched all the way from 2022 to the present, cementing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in Kenya’s rugby premier league scene.

Under head coach Paul Murunga, he admitted it’s never easy to pull off five in a row, but they managed to tick their boxes well.

“The feeling is good. I think the girls have dominated the game, and also on the set pieces, we saw they were shaving all out. 15s is all about scrums, lineouts, and mauls, and they have done well. Winning five Kenya Cups in a row is not an easy job,” Paul Murunga stated.

It was Kulabu Ladies who drew first blood in the first half after Kenya Lionesses star Edith Nariaka crossed over to give them a 5-0 lead, as Sinaida Mokaya missed the conversion.

Mwamba would stretch their advantage further with a try from speedster Janet Okello, who went over the whitewash as Mokaya again missing the conversion, before they were reduced to 14 players on the field, losing Laureen Akoth to the sin bin for 10 minutes following a yellow card.

Quins capitalized on that opening and grabbed a try of their own through Yvette Oketch, then Milka Chitechi slotted a penalty to narrow the gap to 10-8, with Mwamba still hanging onto the lead.

Spirited Harlequins managed to surge ahead before the break, as Shelia Chajira dotted down to give her side a 13-10 lead after the try went unconverted, sending them into halftime on top.

Right at the start of the second half, Mwamba came out with clear intent. Laura restored Mwamba’s lead with a try, before Irene added another, pushing the advantage to 20-13 as Mwamba began taking control of the contest.

With ten minutes left on the clock, Edith struck again, chasing down the ball to score and extend Mwamba’s buffer further. Substitute Namnyak then made an immediate impact off the bench, finishing in the corner to make it 30-13.

Quins had the final word, with Chajira breaking through Mwamba’s defense to score under the posts, bringing the final score to 30-20.

Despite the late push from Quins, it was Mwamba who emerged victorious, sealing a historic fifth consecutive Kenya Cup title.
