- Gor Mahia go nine points clear in the SportPesa League after edging out Kakamega Homeboyz 0-1.
- The match was statged at the Mumias Sport Complex on Sunday May 2, 2026.
- It was Peter Thiong’o who scored the late own goal in the dying minutes of the game, allowing Gor to move to 64 points.
Gor Mahia stretched their lead to nine points at the top of the SportPesa League title race, benefiting from an own goal by Kakamega Homeboyz’s Peter Thiong’o, who made the unfortunate mistake of seeing the ball end up in his own net late at the Mumias Sports Complex on Sunday evening.
Fresh off winning the Masheheni Derby last week, where they beat arch-rivals AFC Leopards 1-0, Gor wanted to keep the momentum rolling and stretch the points gap even further as the league heads toward the finish line.
The match was almost headed for a goalless draw before Thiongo who seemed to be clearing the ball out of his area, just watched his intervention slip into the net, lifting Gor to 64 points at the top, compared to Ingwe’s 55 in second place, who still have a game in hand.

Gor Mahia go nine points clear in the SportPesa League
After a dull opening 20 minutes with zero attempts on target, Gor Mahia chasing a record 22nd title, nearly broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Sharrif Musa wasted a golden chance.
Paul Ochouga set up a nice volley from the left wing, only for Sharrif to lob the ball over the bar with the net wide open for him to slot in.
Both sides maintained control in midfield, and Homeboyz carved out a promising chance in the 39th minute.
Peter Thiong’o surged down the right flank and whipped in a dangerous cross into the box, which narrowly evaded Derrick Otanga as goalkeeper Bryne Omondi stepped in to avert the danger. The first half ended in a tense stalemate, with both teams ruing missed opportunities.
The second half offered little excitement, as a resilient Homeboyz side kept Gor Mahia at bay and dictated much of the tempo without allowing clear shots on target.
However, the tide shifted with less than two minutes remaining from the seven added on.
Ghanaian international Ebenezer Assifuah, who came off the bench, drove down the right wing and sent a volleyed cross into the box.
Thiongo tried to parry it over the bar despite having all the space to clear it, but instead the ball ended up inside his own net, giving Gor the lead.
Gor Mahia were later reduced to ten men after Morrison received a second yellow card, but Homeboyz, despite their numerical advantage and late pressure, failed to find an equalizer.
Now Gor will need to manage their remaining four matches carefully. They must secure at least seven points to be on the safe side and hope Ingwe drop points then they will be crowned SportPesa League champions for the 22nd time.
