Harambee Starlets

Harambee Starlets have been handed a significant boost in their bid to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games after receiving a bye in the first round of the African qualifiers.

The draw, conducted on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo, mapped out Kenya’s route in the Olympic Qualifiers campaign.

Placed in Pot 4, Kenya will not feature in the opening round, allowing them to skip the early qualifiers and enter the competition fresh in the second round.

In tournament football, that kind of advantage can be crucial ,less fatigue, more preparation time, and an opportunity to study potential opponents.

The qualification campaign will feature 35 nations battling across five rounds, but only two teams will ultimately secure tickets to represent Africa at the women’s football tournament of the 2028 Olympics, set for July 11 to July 29 in Los Angeles.

While Kenya sits out the first round, several fixtures will kick off the qualification journey between June 1 and June 9, 2026. Sudan will face Comoros, South Sudan will take on Madagascar, and Mauritius will lock horns with Djibouti.

These matches will determine which teams advance to the next stage, where Africa’s heavyweights await.

Harambee Starlets will begin their campaign in the second round scheduled for October 5 to October 13, 2026, where they are set to face Seychelles. However, the round is packed with high-profile encounters across the continent.

Sudan or Comoros will face Nigeria, while South Sudan or Madagascar will battle South Africa. Mauritius or Djibouti are drawn against Ghana, with Tunisia taking on Senegal and Benin facing Mali. Congo will meet Morocco, Guinea will play Cameroon, and DR Congo will square off with Ivory Coast.

Elsewhere, Central African Republic will face Algeria, Burkina Faso will take on Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda will meet Ethiopia, and Botswana will clash with Tanzania. Angola will play Namibia, Malawi will face Zimbabwe, while East African rivals Uganda and Zambia will also go head-to-head in what promises to be a fierce contest.

For the Beldine Odemba-coached side, the tie against Seychelles is just the opening hurdle. Should they progress, they will advance to the third round scheduled between February 23 and March 6, 2027, where either Malawi or Zimbabwe awaits.

The road becomes even steeper in the fourth round set for October 4 to October 12, 2027. At this stage, the winners from Kenya’s bracket ; potentially Seychelles/Kenya and Malawi/Zimbabwe will face opponents from parallel fixtures, including those involving Uganda or Zambia and the winner between Mauritius/Djibouti and Ghana.

If Harambee Starlets successfully navigate that phase, they will enter the decisive fifth and final round between November 23 and December 4, 2027.

Here, the competition reaches its peak, with multiple brackets converging. Kenya’s pathway could see them face combinations involving Uganda or Zambia, Ghana, Rwanda or Ethiopia, Botswana or Tanzania, Angola or Namibia, and even South Africa depending on earlier outcomes.
