AFC Leopards vs Gor Mahia Mashemeji Derby
  • The Mashemeji Derby second-leg encounter between AFC Leopards vs Gor Mahia is set for Sunday, April 26.
  • The anticipated match will be staged at Nyayo Stadium, with kickoff at 3pm EAT.
  • AFC Leopards won the first leg 1–0 at the same venue last year.

The 25/26 SportPesa League title won’t be decided on Sunday evening at the Nyayo Stadium, but the permutations after AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia clash for the 99th Mashemeji Derby will be intense, with the path ahead looking clear on how it might all unfold.

By April 26, Gor could have established a six-point cushion in the title race against Ingwe or the Fred Ambani side will have drawn level on points.

After that encounter, they will have just five matches remaining to determine where and when the trophy can be lifted.

This is the first time in over a decade the SportPesa League crown could go down to the wire until the final day, with Gor and Ingwe involved, only this time it’s a two-horse race unlike in 2012 when it was a three-way battle.

Tusker, Gor Mahia, and AFC Leopards were all hopefuls that season, each aiming to clinch the title on the final day as the permutations indicated back then, but everything fell in favour of Tusker who won the championship.

K’Ogalo had gone into that final day leading the table with 58 points, while Ingwe and the Brewers were tied on 57.

It was Tusker who claimed their tenth league title after beating Nairobi City Stars 3−0 away at the Hope Centre.

Gor Mahia needed a win against Thika United to secure a record thirteenth title, but the match ended in a 1−1 draw.

Leopards, who were third with 57 points (Tusker ahead on goal difference), also needed a victory for a shot at a record thirteenth title as well, but lost 1−0 away to Chemelil Sugar.

A similar scenario could unfold this season, albeit as a two-team duel, and Sunday’s Mashemeji Derby could finally provide a clearer picture.

In the Round of 28 of the league played last weekend, both sides botched their chances to gain the upper hand.

It was AFC Leopards who squandered first, as they needed the three points on Saturday to leapfrog Gor at the top of the table, where they were separated by two points -Ingwe second at 55 while Gor was at 57, but the Ambani men ended up getting a 3-0 thrashing from Kenya Police FC at the Nyayo Stadium.

It was then Gor’s opportunity on Sunday to stretch that gap to five points, only for them to struggle, drawing 0-0 against Bandari FC in a match marred by controversial decisions at the MISC Kasarani Stadium.

On Sunday, if Gor open a six-point lead, they will be in an advantageous spot, but if AFC Leopards level the points, Kenyans will be treated to a thrilling SportPesa League finish.

AFC Leopards vs Gor Mahia team news

The hosts get a boost from the return of some of their key players: vice captain Kayci Odhiambo, his defensive partner Emmanuel Lwangu, goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi, and winger Julius Masaba, who all might be available for the derby.

However, they missed an influential player, James Kinyanjui, on Saturday when they lost to Kenya Police, and the club has yet to give an update, with fans hoping the winger will be okay for that day.

For the visitors, they will be missing Silvester Owino due to injury, joining Felix Olouch, their striker who was ruled out for the rest of the season.

Ben Stanley Omondi was not available in the squad for Sunday’s draw against Bandari.

They could get a boost in the backline on that day after their first-choice custodian Bryne Omondi resumed training last week, and he might feature in this clash.

AFC Leopards vs Gor Mahia prediction and betting tips

Before a 3-0 defeat to Kenya Police FC, Ingwe had managed to keep four consecutive clean sheets, winning four back-to-back matches.

The recent four Mashemeji derbies have seen fewer than three goals scored in those matches, making this a tight affair.

Gor Mahia are winless in their recent three matches with two draws and one defeat, while Ingwe have lost just one in their recent five encounters: four wins and one loss.

Thus, this match is expected to be one of a kind, with stakes high.

Ingwe have been good especially in midfield, and they might continue exploiting that, as last time they were able to beat Gor in that area.

So being at home, Ingwe might win this encounter, but Gor Mahia do not want any further mistakes on their side, and they must get back to winning ways to ensure the title race favours them.
