Record champions Gor Mahia left Kasarani Stadium with mixed feelings after being held to a goalless draw by Bandari FC on Sunday, a result that saw them extend their lead at the top of the table to three points, while also leaving the title race against AFC Leopards wide open.

Despite a late flurry of chances and a controversial penalty appeal at the death, K’Ogalo could not find a way past the Dockers’ organized backline.

The result leaves Gor reflecting on missed opportunities in their quest to consolidate their lead at the summit, while Bandari will head back to the coast buoyed by a disciplined performance that earned them a valuable point on the road.

Gor Mahia blow chance to go five points clear as Bandari hold them

After a largely uneventful opening quarter characterized by miscued set-pieces from Alpha Onyango and Enock Morrison, the visitors were the first to register a meaningful attack.

William Wadri picked up the ball on the right, skillfully wriggled past Frank Odhiambo, and unleashed a left-footed strike that was deflected out for a corner. On the other end, the hosts’ frustrations began to show early as Paul Ochuoga received the first caution of the day, a yellow card for delaying a restart.

Gor Mahia’s best sequence of the half arrived in the 30th minute when Assifuah chested the ball down perfectly for Ochuoga; the fullback delivered a fleeting cross into the area, but Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw, arriving on the left, skied his effort just wide.

K’Ogalo came close again three minutes before the interval when Adu-Kwaw found Jackson Dwang on the edge of the box, who drifted onto his right before unleashing a shot that missed the target by a few inches.

The hosts’ best chance of the half, however, came on the stroke of halftime. Jackson Dwang threaded a pinpoint through-ball to Assifuah, who turned sharply, but his low shot was well-saved by Allain Ngeleka to keep the scores level at the break.

Seeking to alter the game’s rhythm, Bandari made a tactical switch at the restart, introducing Frank Ouya for William Wadri. Gor Mahia responded with renewed vigor, recording their first shot on target just two minutes into the second half as Enock Morrison’s long-range effort forced a save from Ngeleka.

Bandari countered through Darius Msagha, whose powerful strike from distance required a sharp intervention from Gad Mathews.

Gor, had another golden opportunity from close range when the industrious Ochuoga delivered a wonderful cross from the right wing. However, Assifuah’s subsequent tap-in lacked the necessary power to trouble Ngeleka.

The match reached a boiling point in the closing stages, nearly descending into a physical confrontation after the referee sharply rejected Gor Mahia’s frantic appeals for a penalty.

The ensuing protests forced a minute-long stoppage as tensions flared between the two camps. Once play resumed, neither side could find the decisive blow, leaving the match to end in a goalless stalemate.

Meanwhile, in the other matches on Sunday, former Gor Mahi head coach Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno kicked off his tenure as Posta Rangers boss on the wrong foot, as his side fell 3-0 to APS Bomet at the Kasarni Annex.

Maxwell Kubasu, Edward Masembe, and Antony Naibei managed to hit the back of the net for the law enforcers, who pulled themselves out of the relegation zone as they push for survival.

Elsewhere, Nairobi United staged a sensational comeback to thrash Murang’a SEAL 2-4 at the SportPesa Arena.

Nicholas Macharia had given SEAL the lead in the first half before Michael Karamor bagged a double, with Kevin Wangaya and John Otieno both on target to hand the Nairobi boys the win.
