Kenya 7s in Hong Kong 7s
  • Kenya 7s beat the USA Eagles 17–10 to book a slot in the Hong Kong 7s main Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
  • Shujaa had lost both their matches on Friday to Australia and New Zealand, but the victory against the Eagles has revived their campaign.
  • They will now face South Africa from 13:28pm EAT in the main Cup quarterfinals.

The men’s national sevens side, Shujaa, are through to the Hong Kong Sevens main cup quarterfinals after coming from behind to narrowly edge the USA Eagles 17-10 on Saturday morning at the Kai Tak Sports Park.

Kevin Wambu’s charges, who made costly errors on Friday to drop their two opening matches; a tight 14-5 loss to Australia and a 28-12 defeat to New Zealand, needed to beat the Eagles to keep themselves in Cup contention.

Hoping to replicate their dominant victory the last time the two met in the Sao Paulo leg of the Series 2, Kenya almost got off the hook in the first two minutes after Dennis Abukuse had a chance for early points, only for him, all by himself, to see the ball slip off his hip for a knock-on, and the try was ruled out indefinitely.

But it was the USA who managed to bag the first try through Ben Broselle, who shrugged off Floyd Wabwire on the left wing and just raced through to give the Eagles the lead from the corner – a 5-0 advantage after the conversion went wide.

Another defensive lapse in the right corner saw the USA grab their second try of the day through Lucas Lacamp, as he managed to shake off Wabwire, who was on that line, pushing the lead to 10-0 and heaping pressure on the Shujaa side.

However, before halftime, Kenya managed to cut it to a three-point contest after John Okoth received a slick offload on the right wing, where he went all the way for a try in the whitewash. The long conversion by Nygel Amaitsa then sailed through for a 10-7 scoreline at the break.

The second half saw Shujaa seize a narrow advantage, and this time Abukuse made amends for his earlier first-half mistakes after collecting a nice offload from Samwel Asati on the left. He went through for the five points, making it 12-10.

Then, a moment later, some crisp play from wing to wing saw Shujaa add their third try of the day after the same scrum-half, Asati, managed to offload to Amaitsa, who simply dashed to the corner for the score-one he did not convert, but it was enough to seal the win and sail through to the main cup quarterfinals, despite having started the weekend on a low note.

Now Shujaa will prepare for the main cup quarterfinal, which will be an Africa derby where they will take on the Series one champions, the Springboks of South Africa from 13:28pm EAT, a matchup that promises to be an entertaining outing for both sides.
