Harambee Starlets set for historic showdown against Australia’s Matildas

All roads lead to Nyayo National Stadium this evening as Harambee Starlets prepare for a historic clash against Australia’s Matildas in the women’s FIFA Series final 2026 set to kick off at 5:30 PM EAT.

The encounter marks the first-ever meeting between the two nations, presenting a significant milestone for Kenyan women’s football.

For Harambee Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba, the fixture will be her 27th match in charge, and arguably one of the most high-profile tests of her tenure.

Coming up against a side ranked 15th in the FIFA rankings, Kenya, currently placed 128th, will be eager to rise to the occasion and continue their impressive run in the series.

The Starlets booked their place in the final after a composed 2-0 victory over India, with goals from Martha Amunyolete and Terry Engesha sealing the win.

That result also boosted Kenya’s confidence, especially considering India came into the match ranked above them. On the other hand, Australia stormed into the final in emphatic fashion, thrashing Malawi 5-0 to underline their status as favorites.

Despite the difference in rankings and experience, Odemba remains optimistic about her team’s chances and views the match as a learning curve and an opportunity to grow.

“It is a big game, I agree. I wouldn’t say the toughest because I’ve never played against them. We are going to play against them for the first time. We are prepared for them and we are happy to play against a tough opponent.

I once said that to be a big team, you must play against big teams. We are happy that it is happening, and it will be lessons for us, a good moment for the players, me as a coach, and the country,” she said ahead of the clash.

Kenya’s recent form has been mixed but encouraging. In their last six matches, the Starlets have registered wins against Malawi and Gambia, drawn against Algeria and suffered narrow defeats to Ivory Coast, Benin, and Algeria.

These results reflect a team that is competitive and steadily building resilience on the international stage.

Australia, meanwhile, come into the match with strong momentum, having recorded convincing wins against Iran, North Korea, China and Malawi in their last six outings, alongside a draw against South Korea and a narrow loss to Japan during the AFC Women’s Asia Cup.

However, Kenya will have to navigate the final without key figures. Captain Ruth Ingosi has been ruled out after being stretchered off during the win over India, while striker Vallary Nekesa remains a doubt due to a thigh injury.

Their absence could pose a challenge, but it also opens the door for other players to step up on the big stage.

Australia head coach Joe Montemurro has acknowledged the threat posed by the hosts, praising their physicality and organization.

“Kenya is a very good team. We watched them against India, very dominant, very powerful. So it looks like we will be facing a team that’s very organized, so we expect a big game.

We probably got what we wanted for the series in terms of an Australia-Kenya final, if you want to call it that. Let us hope there will be a full stadium,” he remarked.

With tickets priced at an affordable 100 shillings and live coverage available on TV47, fans are expected to turn up in large numbers to support the Starlets in what promises to be an exciting and memorable final.
