Ariel Okall

Nairobi City Thunder’s Ariel Okall has been nominated for the prestigious BAL Ubuntu Trophy, a recognition that celebrates players who are making a meaningful impact in their communities beyond the basketball court.

Koranga, a veteran Kenyan basketball player, will battle for the accolade alongside Joshua Ozabor of Johannesburg Giants, Ibrahim Famouke Doumbia of Maktown Flyers, and Hasheem Thabeet of Dar City Basketball Club in what promises to be a competitive race for the Season 6 award.

Koranga’s nomination comes as a result of his unwavering commitment to empowering women and creating inclusive opportunities through basketball.

Over the years, he has gone beyond his role as an elite athlete by founding and leading a women’s basketball initiative that provides young women with platforms to grow both professionally and as an athlete.

Koranga faces stiff competition from other nominees who have also made significant contributions to society.

Johannesburg Giants’ Joshua Ozabor has been actively involved in outreach programs targeting underserved communities, focusing on food distribution, educational support, menstrual health awareness and winter relief initiatives.

His efforts have seen essential resources such as meals, clothing, school shoes, and sanitary products reach thousands of vulnerable families and children, positively impacting over 3,000 community members.

Maktown Flyers’ Ibrahim Famouke Doumbia has also been instrumental in supporting young African athletes through initiatives that combine sport, education, and personal development.

His work includes distributing more than 3,000 pairs of shoes across several African countries and organizing basketball camps and tournaments that connect talented youth to international opportunities such as scholarships abroad.

He also promotes leadership and self-sufficiency through life-skills and agricultural training programs.

Dar City Basketball Club’s Hasheem Thabeet, a former NBA player and current President of the Tanzania Basketball Federation, rounds up the nominees.

Thabeet has been at the forefront of basketball development in Tanzania, building sustainable systems, promoting grassroots programs, and creating pathways for young players to grow within the sport.

His leadership continues to inspire youth while strengthening basketball structures across the continent.

Fan voting for the Season 6 BAL Ubuntu Trophy is now open, giving supporters an opportunity to decide the winner through an online campaign.

The BAL Ubuntu Trophy, presented by Qatar Foundation, recognizes a player for exceptional community engagement, with each team nominating one player for the award.

The winner will receive a $10,000 donation to a charity of their choice, subject to BAL approval, and will be honored during a virtual or in-person presentation.

Koranga’s nomination not only highlights his contribution to Nairobi City Thunder but also places Kenyan basketball on the continental map, showcasing how sport can be used as a powerful tool to transform lives and build stronger communities across Africa.
