  • The event is scheduled for Friday, April 24, at Nyayo National Stadium.
  • Notable changes include hosting the meet under floodlights and the introduction of cutting-edge wave-light technology.

The 2026 Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour Gold Meeting will offer a unique experience, with several changes expected for the event set to take place on April 24 at Nyayo National Stadium.

This seventh edition of the Kip Keino Classic will offer a fresh vibe, with organizers planning to hold it under the floodlights on Friday night from 4 pm to 9 pm, marking its comeback at Nyayo National Stadium after the sixth edition was hosted at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.

According to meet director Barnaba Korir, staging the competition in the evening is a far better approach and will be a huge boost for TV production in terms of viewership, as well as stadium capacity.

“In the evening it is actually much better. Especially when it comes to the TV production and also the TV viewership. It is during the evening when the viewers are at home and also those who want to come to the stadium can come. Those who want to watch on TV, they can also watch in the evening when they have the opportunity,” Korir said.

In addition to being held in the evening, the director also stated that they want fans to experience much more of the event, with them also preparing to have an after-party with entertainment performances from top artists who will be announced in the lead-up to the big day.

“Beyond that, we are also going to have big entertainment, and we shall announce the people who will be part of the event. It’s going to be good, and we ask Kenyans to be part of this event.”

Kip Keino Classic 2026 introduces wave-light technology

On top of everything, for the first time, the Kip Keino Classic will feature wave light technology in an attempt to help athletes achieve fast times or even break records to match other global meets.

According to Korir, the latest introduction of this tech innovation aims to assist athletes in clocking impressive times or setting new records, aligning the event with other top-tier international competitions.

“We want to give athletes an opportunity to run fast times during the event, hence the reason for using the technology. Officials from the Diamond League have been in the country since the beginning of the week to assess our stadium and also help us on how the technology can be achieved,” Korir said.

Technical specialists from Timetronics in Belgium, along with Diamond League officials, have been in the country since the beginning of this week to evaluate and inspect the newly installed tartan track and field surfaces at Nyayo Stadium in preparation for the Kip Keino Classic.

While reacting to Kenya’s preparedness, Diamond League technical director for Shanghai, Brussels and Xiamen, Owen Malone, described the process as fruitful, stating that they are leaving nothing to chance to ensure a world-class event that will be talked about for many years to come.

“I would just like to say that it has been a very fruitful three days working alongside Sports Kenya, Athletics Kenya, in preparation of the events. We have been focusing on the sports equipment, on the timing equipment, and on television and event presentation,” Malone said.

“Another aspect of the site visit has been the measurement of the track for the track certification by World Athletics. We had a surveyor come in and I would say, in general, everything is looking good. I think the track certification is very well possible within the time frame.”

This will be the second stop in the Gold Label Continental Tour series, following the Maurie Plant Meet in Australia, and among the top athletes set to compete in this championship are the 100m Commonwealth champion Ferdinand Omanyala and Olympic hammer throw champion Ethan Katzberg from Canada.
