Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has challenged his players to maintain their tactical discipline and momentum as they prepare for their Round 25 SportPesa League clash against Shabana on Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the game, Akonnor emphasized that despite their current lead at the top of the table, there is no room for complacency in the K’Ogalo camp.

“Of course, this is a very important match that we have to do our best to maintain the level of momentum that we have, play well tactically, to be deep and be smart. We’ve seen them a couple of times and we know how they can play,” he said.

The ex-Ghanaian international also noted the recent managerial changes at Shabana, but insisted his team remains focused strictly on their own plan and its execution.

Gusii-based Shabana recently dismissed head coach Peter Okidi after a painful 2-1 loss at home to Kariobangi Sharks FC.

“Unfortunately, I think the coach is not there anymore, and so we are focused on what to do on that day and that is it. We’re looking forward to make sure we get the three points,”

Tore Bobe will head into the clash with assistant coach Andrew Mark Ongwae taking charge on interim basis.

In terms of squad fitness, the coach confirmed a nearly clean bill of health, with only one notable absentee.

“Apart from Sylvester, I think everybody is saying we are ready. Everybody is good to go. And we look forward to the coming week, the next days of training sessions, and look deep into who will be available and who can start,” he noted.

The league leaders are expected to miss the services of the Owino for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery following his injury in the first half of the match against Ulinzi Stars.

However, Akonnor sent a clear message to his players regarding the starting lineup for the clash warning that nobody is guaranteed a starting spot

“As it stands now, nobody is guaranteed a position until the week comes to an end where we will select the next player who will be able to help us to win the match,” he concluded.

Gor Mahia will look to reopen their 10-point lead at the top of the log as they head into this weekend’s highly anticipated encounter.
