Collins Sichenje set to face Zak Vyner as Charlton Athletic host Wrexham in Championship

Harambee Stars defenders Collins Sichenje and Zak Vyner were both in action as Wrexham AFC edged out Charlton Athletic 1-0 in a tightly contested English Championship clash at The Valley.

Although neither defender was named in the starting XI, both played their part in a game that was decided by fine margins. Sichenje was introduced as early as the 13th minute after Charlton suffered a setback at the back.

Defender Reece Burke pulled up with an injury, forcing manager Nathan Jones into an early change. The Kenyan centre-back was handed the responsibility of steadying the ship against a Wrexham side that had started the match brightly.

On the opposite end, Vyner had to wait patiently for his opportunity. The Wrexham defender was brought on in the 77th minute as manager Phil Parkinson sought to reinforce his side’s defensive structure for the closing stages.

With Charlton pressing for an equaliser, Vyner’s introduction added fresh legs and composure to the visitors’ backline.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 30th minute courtesy of Ollie Rathbone. After a swift attacking move down the left, the ball fell kindly into his path on the edge of the area.

Rathbone took a touch to set himself before unleashing a well-struck volley into the bottom corner, leaving Charlton goalkeeper Will Mannion with no chance. It was a moment of quality in a match where clear-cut chances were few and far between.

Charlton tried to respond, growing into the contest as the first half progressed. Tyreece Campbell thought he had found the net midway through the opening period, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The hosts continued to push after the break, forcing Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo into a couple of important interventions.

However, Wrexham showed resilience and discipline in defence. As Charlton increased the pressure in the final quarter of the match, the visitors remained organised, limiting the hosts to speculative efforts and half chances. Vyner slotted seamlessly into the defensive unit, helping see out the game and protect the slender advantage.

In the end, Rathbone’s strike proved enough to separate the two sides. The 1-0 victory ensured Wrexham returned to North Wales with maximum points, while Charlton were left to rue missed opportunities despite a spirited display in front of their home crowd.

For Collins Sichenje, the outing marked his third appearance since completing a move from Serbian side FK Vojvodina to Charlton Athletic.

The former AFC Leopards defender is still settling into the pace and physical demands of the Championship, but his early introduction in such a competitive fixture underlined the growing trust placed in him by the technical bench.

Each appearance continues to sharpen his understanding of English football, and performances like this will only strengthen his case for more minutes in the weeks ahead.

On the other side, Zak Vyner was making just his second appearance for Wrexham AFC since joining from fellow Championship outfit Bristol City. Having recently returned from injury, Vyner’s cameo was another important step in rebuilding his match fitness and rhythm.

His composed display in the closing stages reflected both experience and resilience, qualities Wrexham will rely on as the season gathers momentum.

For the Harambee Stars duo, the clash at The Valley was more than just another league fixture it was a reminder of their steady progress in one of the most demanding leagues in Europe.

As they continue to adapt to new environments and challenges, both defenders remain key figures for Kenya’s national team, carrying valuable experience that will undoubtedly benefit Harambee Stars in future assignments.
