Gor Mahia brace for 2026 FKF Cup clash against giant killers BB Bread

Gor Mahia will be seeking to open a 9-point gap at the top of the 25/26 SportPesa League standings when they host Mathare United at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday afternoon in the first match of Gameweek 23 with kickoff scheduled for 1600 EAT.

While the record Kenyan champions are looking to tighten their grip at the summit, the Slum Boys will be aiming to pull off a massive upset after an inconsistent run of form.

Gor Mahia, currently sitting top of the log with 46 points, enter the tie in imperious form under Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor.

K’Ogalo are enjoying a six-match winning streak, most recently dismantling KCB 3-0.

With title rivals AFC Leopards and Shabana breathing down their necks on 40 points each, the record champions are favorites to complete a league double over Mathare, having already beaten them 2-0 earlier in the season.

The visiting Mathare occupy 11th place with 26 points and are coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss to Shabana.

The Slum Boys have struggled for consistency, winning only one of their last five matches. While they have shown flashes of quality, facing the league’s most clinical attack will be a real tactical test.

Team News

Gor Mahia will still be without the services of top scorer Felix Oluoch who remains sidelined with patellar tendinopathy.

Frank Odhiambo seems to have dislodged Mike Kibwage in the central defence position and is expected to start alongside Sylvester Owino.

Mathare United coach John Kamau may look to ring changes in the midfield after expressing frustration with his side’s ball retention in their last outing against Shabana.

The Slum Boys will likely continue without the services of veteran forward John Mark Makwatta who unfortunately lost his brother.

Coach Perspective

Akonnor has expressed full trust with his squad after the recent string of good performances backing the team to go all the way and win the title.

“If you looked at it some four, five months ago, we would be a little bit worried, but now we are very confident of how the players process things and how they play and happy to be at the top of the table. Now it’s how we maintain the momentum going forward that matters,” he said.

Mathare’s Kamau has emphasized on the need for players to adhere to his tactical decisions.

It comes amid criticism of his decision to hook off Douglas Mokaya after just 18 minutes in the match against Shabana.

Kamau however defended his decision saying, “If we introduce you to keep possession but instead keep losing it, he has to understand that we are in the second leg and every player must utilize the minutes they get however few they are.”
