Kenyan international defender Collins Sichenje made his much-anticipated full debut for Charlton Athletic Football Club as the Addicks secured a valuable 1-1 draw against Southampton Football Club in an English Championship encounter at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday February 21.

The 22-year-old defender, who joined Charlton during the final stages of the January transfer window, was handed a starting role as manager Nathan Jones opted for a tactical setup that focused on defensive solidity while maintaining attacking threat on the break.

Sichenje’s inclusion reflected the coaching staff’s confidence in his ability to adapt quickly to English football’s physical and tactical demands.

Southampton dominated possession in the opening half, creating several dangerous chances but finding Charlton’s backline well organised. Early pressure saw a third-minute volley cleared off the line, while a long-range effort later in the half struck the crossbar, signaling the home side’s attacking intent.

After a goalless first half, Southampton broke the deadlock three minutes into the second period. A well-delivered cross into the box was flicked home with precision, leaving Charlton goalkeeper with little chance to react.

The goal forced the visitors to respond, and Charlton gradually grew into the match.

The Addicks restored parity in the 67th minute through Sonny Carey, whose low drive from the edge of the penalty area found the bottom corner after good build-up play down the left wing. The equaliser injected belief into Charlton, who pressed forward in search of a winner.

Charlton came close late in the game through set-piece situations and attacking transitions, but Southampton’s defence held firm despite sustained pressure. The match also extended into ten minutes of stoppage time, during which Charlton defended resolutely to preserve the point.
