The Slum Derby once again lived up to expectations as Kariobangi Sharks and Mathare United settled for a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Police Sacco Stadium.
Second-half goals from John Mark Makwata and Kevinluke Otiala ensured the spoils were shared in a result that carries different implications for both sides.

Kariobangi Sharks and Mathare United share spoils
Humphrey Aroko, the club’s top scorer this season, led the attack alongside Ally Salum and David Majak as the Sharks looked to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
On the other hand, Mathare United coach John Kamau named a balanced side, with John Makwata spearheading the attack.
The Sharks started brightly, pressing high and enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the opening exchanges. As early as the fifth minute, they were dictating the tempo, forcing Mathare to sit back and absorb pressure.
However, it was Mathare who nearly struck first in the eighth minute when Sammy Imbuye whipped in a dangerous cross that almost turned into a shot, nearly catching goalkeeper Sebastian Wekesa off guard.
Aroko came close to breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute. The forward unleashed a low drive that forced Mathare goalkeeper Kevin Ouru into a stunning full-stretch save to keep the game level. Minutes later, play was briefly halted to allow Brian Ouru to receive medical attention, though he was able to continue.
Kevin Ouru was called into action again in the 38th minute, producing a superb double save after rushing off his line to deny two quick attempts from the Sharks.
At the other end, Kariobangi’s defence, marshalled by captain Timothy Ekhavi alongside Ian Karani and Kevinluke Otiala, stood firm to ensure the first half ended goalless.
Mathare wasted no time after the restart. Just a minute into the second half, they grabbed the lead. Brian Ouru delivered a well-weighted pass into the area, and John Mark Makwata calmly slotted the ball past Wekesa.

It was a familiar script for Makwata, who scored against his former club for the second time this season; having scored against the winner against Ulinzi Stars
Tempers briefly flared in the 57th minute following a rash challenge by Makwata, but the situation was quickly brought under control. Mathare continued to push, making changes in the 69th minute as Kinyanjui and Okoth replaced Oduor and Makwata.
Kevin Ouru remained busy, pulling off another excellent save in the 70th minute to deny the Sharks from a fast break, with defender Ian Omondi playing a key role in shutting down the danger.
With 12 minutes left on the clock, Kariobangi Sharks found their equaliser. Defender Kevinluke Otiala rose to the occasion in the 78th minute, finishing from close range to restore parity and reignite the contest. Mathare nearly snatched a late winner in the 82nd minute, but substitute Paul Kinyanjui fired over from a promising position.
In the end, both sides had to settle for a point. The draw marked Kariobangi Sharks’ 10th of the season, but it was enough to lift them slightly above the relegation zone. For Mathare United, it was their fifth draw of the campaign, leaving them 11th on the league table.
