Kenya U20 midfielder Zech Obiero enjoyed a memorable afternoon in England after scoring on his home debut for Tranmere Rovers who beat Crawley Town 2-0 on Saturday.

The young Kenyan, who is currently on loan from Leyton Orient in search of regular game time, announced himself in style at Prenton Park with a confident display capped by a well-taken goal.

For a player eager to make an impact away from his parent club, it was the perfect response.

Obiero’s influence was felt early in the game. In the sixth minute, he came close to opening the scoring when his initial effort was saved by the Crawley goalkeeper.

Sam Finley reacted quickest to slot home the rebound, but celebrations were cut short as the goal was ruled out for offside. Rather than letting that setback affect them, Rovers continued to press with purpose.

Just six minutes later, Obiero ensured there would be no denying him. Breaking into the box with intent, the Kenyan midfielder showed composure beyond his years, rifling the ball into the roof of the net to hand Tranmere the lead.

It was his first goal for the club and a special moment, particularly coming in front of the home supporters.

Crawley attempted to respond midway through the first half, but goalkeeper Marko Marosi produced a fine save to deny Josh Flint at the near post.

Rovers continued to create chances, with James Plant striking the crossbar from close range in the 25th minute. At the other end, Marosi was again called into action, standing tall to keep out Ronan Darcy in a one-on-one situation.

The hosts doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time. Charlie Whitaker was brought down inside the area, and striker Joe Ironside calmly converted the resulting penalty, placing the ball into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Tranmere managed the game effectively, maintaining control and limiting Crawley’s opportunities.

Obiero remained lively before being substituted later in the contest, receiving warm applause from the 5,739 supporters in attendance, including 181 travelling fans.

The result strengthens Tranmere’s position in English Football League Two and provides further encouragement for Obiero as he continues his development in England.
