The Kenyan football fraternity is in a state of deep shock and mourning following the tragic death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana.
The player passed away late Wednesday night while receiving emergency medical care at the Kakamega County General Hospital.
Abungana succumbed to severe head injuries sustained during a violent attack on the night of Tuesday, February 3.
The news was confirmed his club Kakamega Homeboyz who described the incident as a dark day in the club’s history.
“The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday,4 February while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, this after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, 3 February night.
During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” read the statement.

Tributes have continued to pour in led by FKF President Hussein Mohammed who eulogized the defender
“I join the football community in expressing my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and Kakamega Homeboyz FC for the sudden demise of Silas Abungana. May his love for football inspire us all, and may his cherished memories bring comfort during this difficult time,” Hussein said.
His former club Shabana also joined in the tributes expressing grief in a social media post on Thursday
“Sisi ni wake Mungu na kwake tutarejea. Pumzika kwa amani Sailas Abungana,” they posted.
Abungana was a core member of the squad that led Shabana to top flight promotion.
His immediate former club Gucha Youth FC also mourned the solid centreback.

“Gucha Youth joins the football fraternity in mourning the sudden passing of Kakamega Homeboys defender, Silas Abungana.
We extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to his family, relatives, friends, teammates, and the entire Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club fraternity. May the Almighty God grant them comfort, strength, and peace during this profoundly difficult period.”
Police in Kakamega have confirmed that they are pursuing several leads. No arrests have been made yet, but security agencies have assured the public and the football community that they are working tirelessly to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and the club in the coming days.
