Kenya U20 midfielder Zech Obiero joins English League 2 side Tranmere Rovers

Kenya U20 midfielder Zech Obiero has completed a loan move to English League Two side Tranmere Rovers, joining from League One outfit Leyton Orient for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

The temporary switch will see the 21-year-old spend the second half of the campaign at Prenton Park as he looks to gain regular first-team football and continue his development in the English league system.

Obiero’s loan is officially set to run from February 2, 2026, until May 31, 2026, after which he is expected to return to his parent club, Leyton Orient.

The deal does not include an option to buy, underlining that this is a straight loan arrangement aimed at giving the midfielder valuable game time rather than a permanent move at this stage of his career.

The central midfielder has featured eight times for Leyton Orient this season and has steadily been working his way into senior football after progressing through the club’s youth ranks.

Having joined Orient’s academy from Tottenham Hotspur at the age of 14, Obiero signed professional terms in 2022 and has since accumulated experience through loan spells at non-League sides Cheshunt and Chelmsford City.

Speaking after completing the move, Obiero made it clear that regular football was his main motivation.

“Going out on loan is something that I really wanted for the second half of this season,” he said. “I’m going to give my all for Tranmere and hopefully I can learn a lot from the experience and can fight for my place here for next season.”

Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens echoed those sentiments, stressing the importance of consistent minutes for the young midfielder. “This is a great opportunity for Zech,” Wellens said.

“As I have said previously, he needs to play regularly and learn all sides of the game. Once he’s done this, he has the ability to become a really big player for us.”

Tranmere Rovers, meanwhile, have welcomed Obiero as a player they believe can add energy and creativity to their midfield as they push through the latter stages of the season. Announcing the signing, the club highlighted his technical ability and positive attitude, qualities that manager Andy Crosby feels will suit the League Two environment.

“We’re really pleased to bring Zech in,” Crosby said.

“He’s a young player with potential and a fantastic attitude. He’s technically good, plays with energy and bravery. We believe this is the perfect environment for him to continue his development, and we’re excited to help him take the next step in his career.”

Obiero also outlined the style of play he intends to bring to Tranmere.

“I’m really happy to be here, excited to start a new journey and just ready to get going,” he said. “I’m more attacking-minded. I like to work hard and track back, but going forward I enjoy dribbling and getting goals and assists. That’s my game.”

Standing at 1.70 metres and primarily operating as a central midfielder, Obiero is valued at €75,000, a figure that reflects his steady progression through the English system. Eligible to represent both Kenya and England, he remains an important prospect for Kenya’s U20 setup.

As he begins his loan spell at Tranmere Rovers, Obiero will be keen to make a strong impression, knowing that performances over the coming months could play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of his career when he returns to Leyton Orient at the end of the season.
