Mathare United boost midfield options with Isaac Omweri signing

SportPesa League outfit Mathare United have strengthened their squad ahead of the second half of the League season 25/26 after completing the signing of highly-rated attacking midfielder Isaac Omweri.

The former Shabana and Nairobi United playmaker joins the Slum Boys on a Bosman transfer having parted ways with SportPesa League newbies Nairobi United, adding creativity and experience to John Kamau’s side as they look to improve their attacking output.

The club has confirmed the move, making Isaac Omweri their second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of experienced forward Michael Oduor.

The recruitment signals Mathare’s intent to address areas that troubled them during the first leg of the season, particularly in the final third.

In a statement released by the club, Mathare United expressed their delight at securing the midfielder’s services.

The club is pleased to announce the signing of Isaac Omweri, who was most recently attached to Nairobi United,” read part of the announcement.

The winger becomes the club’s second signing this January and joins Michael Oduor in committing his immediate future to the club.”

Isaac Omweri arrives at Mathare United with an impressive résumé built during a highly successful spell at Nairobi United. Despite playing in the FKF National Super League, the midfielder stood out as one of the most influential players in the country.

His performances earned him a place in the national spotlight, becoming the only FKF National Super League player to receive a national team call-up last year, when he was selected for the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.

His impact at club level was equally significant. Omweri was named Nairobi United’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024/25 season, recognition that underlined his importance to the team.

He also delivered on the big stage, earning Man of the Match honours in the FKF Cup quarter-final against Kakamega Homeboyz, where he scored in Nairobi United’s memorable 2-0 victory.

Across the campaign, Omweri was instrumental as Nairobi United enjoyed a historic season.

He registered an impressive 17 assists and 7 goals, playing a central role as the club clinched both the FKF National Super League title , earning a promotion to the SportPesa League and winning the FKF Cup.

The achievement saw Nairobi United qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup group stage for the first time in their history, a milestone Omweri helped make possible.

Upon completing his move, the Kibabii High School alumnus expressed his excitement at joining one of Kenya’s most storied clubs.

“I am happy to be here and to be able to continue my career at such a club,” Omweri said. “Mathare is a historic team and I am happy to be chosen to add to this history.”

For Mathare United, Omweri’s arrival offers versatility, creativity and proven end product from midfield.

As the Slum Boys look to climb the table and build momentum in the second half of the season, the signing could prove to be a defining addition to their campaign.
