Tanzania may have opened their AFCON 2025 campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria, but for head coach Miguel Gamondi, the result only told half the story.
Under the floodlights of the Fès Stadium, Taifa Stars delivered a performance that challenged reputations, tested one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses, and announced their intent to be more than mere participants at the continental showpiece.
Facing a Super Eagles side that arrived in Morocco as runners-up from the previous edition boosting an all Europe-based starting eleven bar goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali who is based in South Africa, Tanzania were expected by many to retreat into a defensive shell.

Instead, Gamondi’s men showed courage, tactical discipline, and a refreshing willingness to play on the front foot. Although Nigeria eventually claimed all three points, they were made to work for every inch.
The West Africans struck first in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi rose highest to head home Alex Iwobi’s precise delivery from a corner.
It was a reminder of Nigeria’s aerial strength and individual quality, but also one of the few moments where Tanzania briefly lost concentration. Gamondi later acknowledged that lapse, describing the goal as a costly mistake rather than a systemic failure.

True to their coach’s philosophy, Tanzania emerged from the break with renewed belief.
Their reward came five minutes after the restart when Kokola M’mombwa perfectly timed his run, beat the offside line, and calmly finished past Stanley Nwabali to draw Taifa Stars level.
The equaliser was deserved and reflected Tanzania’s growing confidence as they stretched Nigeria with quick transitions and compact pressing.

That joy, however, was short-lived. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman reminded everyone of Nigeria’s cutting edge, producing a stunning left-footed strike to restore the Super Eagles’ lead. It proved decisive, yet even then Tanzania refused to crumble.
Taifa Stars win respect despite Super Eagles loss
Speaking after the match, Gamondi cut a composed and proud figure.
“The performance of my players was great, even though we committed the mistake from the corner where we conceded the first goal,” he said. “When you look at the gap in quality and value between the two teams, how we applied ourselves tactically and reduced spaces, everything was great.”

Perhaps most telling was his rejection of the notion that Tanzania came to simply defend.
“People thought we would pack the bus, but that is not my philosophy,” the Singida Black Stars Coach explained. “Yes, you must defend, even more at this level, but you also need to attack and not respect the opponent too much.”
Nigeria felt that ambition. Victor Osimhen had a goal ruled out for offside by VAR, a moment that underlined how stretched the Super Eagles were forced to be by Tanzania’s bold approach.

While Nigeria sit top of Group C after matchday one, Taifa Stars left the pitch with belief intact and will be hoping to carry on the same fighting spirit when they take on Uganda in the all East African affair Afcon group C clash on Saturday 27th.
For Tanzania, the scoreboard showed defeat, but the performance carried promise.
If they can marry this bravery with sharper concentration in key moments, Gamondi’s side may yet turn pride into points as the tournament unfolds.
