Tanzania captain Mbwana Samatta has expressed strong confidence in Taifa Stars’ ability to compete at the highest level as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025), insisting that the team is mentally and physically prepared to face any opponent placed in their path.
Drawn into a challenging group alongside The Super Eagles of Nigeria, Tunisia and Uganda, Tanzania who are yet to win an AFCON match enter the tournament as underdogs on paper.
However, Samatta believes that AFCON is a competition where pedigree alone does not win matches and preparation and belief play a decisive role.

The experienced forward noted that once teams reach the continental finals, every match presents a serious test regardless of the opponent.
“At this level, there are no easy games,” Samatta said, underlining the intensity of the tournament. “Every team here has qualified on merit, so you must be ready for whoever you face.”
Tanzania’s campaign begin with a high-profile encounter against Nigeria, a fixture that is set to immediately expose the squad to the demands of elite African football.

While acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Samatta stressed that such matches are necessary for the growth of the team.
According to the skipper, facing top sides offers valuable lessons and helps players understand what is required to compete consistently at AFCON level.
“If you want to achieve something meaningful at this tournament, you must be ready to play against strong teams,” he added. “Those are the matches that show you where you stand and what you need to improve.”

Samatta also spoke positively about the atmosphere within the Taifa Stars camp, revealing that preparations have been smooth and that the players are united in their objectives.
He highlighted the importance of discipline, concentration and teamwork, especially in a group where small mistakes can be punished.
“The mood in camp has been very good,” Samatta explained. “The players are focused, training has been positive, and everyone understands their role.”

Beyond tactics and preparation, the captain acknowledged his responsibility as one of the most experienced players in the squad.
With several young players featuring at AFCON for the first time, Samatta believes leadership on and off the pitch is crucial in keeping the team composed.
“I try to guide the younger players and help them stay calm,” he said. “This tournament can be overwhelming, but belief and confidence make a big difference.”

Samatta has also called on Tanzanian fans to rally behind the team, noting that encouragement from home provides an added boost during difficult moments.
As Taifa Stars kickstart their AFCON 2025 journey, the captain’s message remains clear: Tanzania are not at the tournament simply to participate.
“We respect every opponent,” Samatta concluded, “but we are ready to compete against any team.”
