Vihiga Queens welcome Ulinzi Starlets

Record Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Premier League champions Vihiga Queens welcome Ulinzi Starlets as they renew their rivalry with the FKF Women’s Cup champions on Sunday afternoon at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu from 3PM.

The Gameweek 4 match will be preceded by Kisumu All Starlets hosting defending champions Police Bullets at the same venue.

The fixture is particularly important for Vihiga who were in first position heading into Gameweek Four before being overtaken by Trinity Starlets after their 4-2 win over Kisped Queens on Saturday afternoon.

Overally, the two teams have met eight times in the league. The Legacy Makers have emerged victorious in four matches while the Soldiers have triumphed only once, with the remaining three ending in draws.

Vihiga head into the fixture buoyed by their impressive start to the season with three wins and nine points out of the possible nine, scoring eleven and conceding only once.

On the other hand, Ulinzi remain the only team yet to concede a goal after three matches, with two wins and a draw to brag about. They will be facing the highest-scoring team.

The coach Collins Oduor-managed Soldiers will be without the services of goalkeeper Judith Omondi, who was sent off in their last match against Zetech, while Vihiga have a full house to choose from.

Ulinzi are banking on the services of dynamic midfielder Lavender Akinyi, who has impressed for club and country, while Vihiga boast the availability of Martha Amunyolet.

The midfielder has managed to score in all three matches they have played this season. With eight goals, she’s currently the top scorer in the league.

She particularly scored five goals in their gameweeek three match against Kisped Queens.

The game is more than just the three points as there’s make-or-break history at stake.

Ulinzi currently hold the longest active unbeaten streak in the league, dating back to Gameweek One of the 2024/25 season. Coincidentally, they lost to Vihiga on that day in Kisumu.

Since then, they have managed to string twenty-three matches without tasting defeat, a feat bettered only by Vihiga, who hold the record of most consecutive matches without defeat (24).

Ahead of the fixture, Vihiga Queens head coach Boniface Nyamu had deep respect for Ulinzi but maintains they have all it takes to secure all three points.

“Ulinzi are a very strong team and genuine title contenders. We respect them, but we’ll capitalize on our home advantage and work hard to get maximum points,” he said.

A win for Vihiga will see them get back to the top of the table in their quest for a historic fifth league title, while victory for Ulinzi gets them to ten points and potentially third as they seek their first-ever top-flight silverware.
