KCB FC have been dealt a major blow after their defender Gideon Were was ruled out for the rest of the 25/26 SportPesa League season following a knee injury that required surgery.
The center-back, who joined the Bankers from AFC Leopards during the last transfer window, confirmed that he underwent a successful operation after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during pre-season.
Were revealed that he first felt discomfort in his knee during training sessions before medical examinations confirmed the extent of the injury.

KCB defender Gideon Were suffers ACL injury
“I tore my ACL during pre-season,” the defender said. “I had some discomfort and recently went for a check-up, and that’s when we found out the real cause of the problem. I’ve had a successful surgery, and now my focus is on recuperating and getting back stronger.”
According to the doctors, the recovery process will take approximately seven months, meaning the defender will miss the entire current SportPesa League campaign.
“I will probably be out for close to seven months, with my rehab set to take long as advised by the doctor for me to be fully recovered, but I’m optimistic that I will return stronger,” he added.
Were’s absence is a big setback for KCB head coach Robert Matano, who had counted on the young defender to marshal his backline this season having been one of his marquee signings.
Despite the disappointment, Were remains upbeat about his recovery journey. The former Leopards man thanked the club and fans for their support, promising to return even better once he regains full fitness.
“It’s not easy being sidelined for such a long period, but I’m taking it positively. The club has been very supportive, and I’m motivated to come back stronger,” he said.
KCB will now have to navigate the rest of the campaign without one of their highly rated defenders, hoping his absence won’t derail their chase for silverware.
