Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga was honoured on Saturday afternoon at the start of the Romanian women’s top-tier league match between Gloria Bistrita and Farul Constanta.

A one-minute silence was observed before kickoff at the Baza Sportivă Gloria in Bistrița.

Farul is home to Harambee Starlets duo of left-back Enez Mango and goalkeeper Lilian Awuor.

The two were named in the starting eleven and played the full minutes as the club cruised to a 0-1 away victory as the club regained their lead at the top of the table after nine rounds.

Notably, Awuor hails from Raila’s home county of Siaya, where he will be laid to rest on Sunday at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi.

The former Prime Minister, a passionate football enthusiast and advocate for the sport’s unifying power, was a lifelong patron of Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC and a devoted fan of Arsenal.

He actively played football in his youth for Luo Union FC and later for the Kenyan Parliamentary team Bunge FC while serving as the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata constituency.

The international recognition bestowed upon ” Baba” adds to the tributes flowing in from different parts of the globe after the unfortunate demise of the long-serving Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Wednesday in India.

Among the notable tributes came from former US President Barack Obama who hailed Odinga as a true champion of democracy.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya. Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions.

Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values. Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed.

Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya,” Obama condoled.

For Awuor and Mango, focus now turns to the national team assignment where they are expected to link up with the rest of the Harambee Starlets squad in camp ahead of the crucial final round of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against The Gambia on the 24th at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The aggregate winner will qualify for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
