Ryan Ogam leads Harambee Stars quartet to be declared national heroes during Mashujaa Day 2025

  • Their nomination is primarily attributed to their exceptional performances in the recently concluded Pamoja CHAN 2024 tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Four prominent Harambee Stars players: Ryan Ogam, Byrne Omondi, Alpha Onyango, and Abud Omar, are among 31 distinguished Kenyan sportsmen and women set to be honored on October 20th during the Mashujaa Day Celebrations.

The prestigious event will be held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.

The quartet has been nominated by the National Heroes Council to be declared national heroes for their exceptional contributions to Kenyan football.

Their nomination stems particularly a result of their standout performances at the recently concluded Pamoja CHAN 2024 tournament in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Also in line for national recognition is Kenya Under-17 Women’s National Team Head Coach Mildred Omari Cheche. Cheche made history in 2024 by becoming the first Kenyan coach to successfully lead any Kenyan team, male or female, to a FIFA World Cup event.

The CAF B holder achievement marked a significant and inspiring milestone for women’s football and coaching development in the country.

Harambee Stars Data Analyst Nick Kimanthi is being feted for his pivotal role in utilizing sophisticated player performance data. His analysis guides tactical decisions and competitive approach to games.

Other distinguished figures in football nominated for the awards include Nicholas Musonye, Chairman of the CHAN 2024/AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee.

Harambee Stars will face Burundi in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday, October 9, in Bujumbura.

A former long serving Secretary General of CECAFA, Musonye is recognized for his long standing administrative impact on regional football.

Esteemed Sports journalist Shadrack Andenga Odinga also makes the list of the awardees.

The Mashujaa Day honors serve to recognize the significant achievements and tireless work of Kenyans in different fields of work throughout the year.

Another notable inclusion is former director of communication in the ministry of sports, Pauline Sheghu.

Sheghu is being celebrated for her significant contribution to motorsport in Kenya. Her key achievements include finishing on the podium in the World Rally Championship three times in a row.

For over 15 years, she has championed women’s participation in motorsports, an effort that has earned her global acclaim and recognition.
