Timothy Ouma celebrates with teammates in big win

Kenyan international Timothy Ouma featured for the full 90 minutes as Polish side Lech Poznań produced a commanding performance to beat Rapid Wien 4-1 in a UEFA Conference League group stage clash played on Thursday night at the Enea Stadion in Poznań.

The result marked Lech’s strong start to their European campaign, with the Polish giants proving far too clinical for their Austrian visitors.

Lech lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ouma, operating in midfield alongside Filip Jagiello, tasked with providing balance between defense and attack. Rapid Wien set up in a 4-3-3, looking to use their width to trouble the hosts.

The home side took control of proceedings early on, pressing high and forcing errors from Rapid. Their attacking trio of Luis Palma, Taofeek Ismaheel and Mikael Ishak combined seamlessly, with Ouma helping dictate tempo in midfield and recycling possession effectively.

It did not take long for Lech to assert themselves. In the 13th minute, Luis Palma opened the scoring with a composed finish after being set up by a flowing move that cut through Rapid’s defense.

Just eight minutes later, captain Mikael Ishak doubled the lead, again assisted by Palma, leaving Rapid Wien stunned at 2-0 down before the half-hour mark.

Lech continued to dominate  and their pressure paid off deep into stoppage time of the first half. Nigerian winger Taofeek Ismaheel struck from close range after another incisive attack, making it 3-0 and effectively killing off Rapid’s hopes before the break.

Rapid Wien attempted to mount a comeback in the second half  and were rewarded in the 64th minute when Andrija Radulovic pulled one back, finishing off a cross from Jannes-Kilian Horn.

However, any momentum for the visitors was short-lived. Substitute Leo Bengtsson restored Lech’s three-goal cushion in the 77th minute after being set up by Ismaheel on the counterattack, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 victory for the Polish side.

Lech’s approach revolved around compact midfield play and quick transitions. With Ouma and Jagiello screening the back four, the wide attackers had freedom to push forward.

Palma was instrumental, providing a goal and two assists, while Ismaheel’s pace and directness stretched Rapid’s defense throughout.

Ouma’s contribution was subtle but crucial, breaking up play, linking passes, and maintaining the rhythm in midfield. His presence allowed Lech’s attacking trio to flourish, and his discipline ensured Rapid’s midfield found little room to operate.

Rapid’s main threat came through Radulovic, who worked tirelessly on the left flank and eventually got his reward. Yet defensively, the Austrians struggled to cope with Lech’s intensity and were repeatedly caught out on the counter.

The emphatic victory leaves Lech Poznań well-placed in the league phase of the 2025/26 Conference League. Ouma will be hoping to continue being a regular with his new side.

The former Nairobi City Stars midfielder has been consistently featuring for the Polish champions since joining the club on loan from Slavia Prague.
